atrlcritic | Ed Sheeran's new songs after the upgrade
IMPORTANT - REVIEW REQUIREMENTS
In order to combat certain types of reviews, I've implemented a set of length requirements that will deter both short reviews and short sentences.
All single reviews MUST be at least 80 words in length.
Sample 80 Word Review
Quote:
Song Title by Artist is good but has weak spots. I like the instrumental, but the vocals are a bit weak. The production outshines the lyricism in this track. The prechorus melody is really catchy, and the bridge is a nice change of pace. Unfortunately, by the final chorus I was a bit bored. Although this track doesn't have much replay value, it'll be fun to dance to at a party. All in all, I thought this song was decent.
|
All album reviews MUST be at least 150 words in length.
Sample 150 Word Review
Quote:
Album Title is a stunning collection. It begins with Song Title, which is so addictive. I'd bop to the instrumental. Song Title 2 and Song Title 3 seem like cheap filler, but Song Title 4 is when the album picks back up. The guest rap from Rap Artist fits the song well, and the verse melodies are great. Song The two other standout tracks are Song Title 6 and Song Title 9. Song Title 7 is the perfect mix of emotional and upbeat, and its inspirational lyrics are great to hear. Song Title 9 is the perfect way to close out the album, as its epic final chorus brings the house down.
Overall, this album was very cohesive and most of the songs were catchy and pleasant. Nothing felt out of place or forced on the album. I was very satisfied with Album Title, as it's an excellent pop album.

Please know that these new requirements are only for the better. They are not meant to discourage stans from writing reviews; they are meant to promote more thoughtful and detailed reviews.
About
Welcome to atrlcritic! Based on the popular entertainment review website metacritic, atrlcritic is a collaborative effort between members and moderators of ATRL to review and rate the latest releases. Members will be given the opportunity to share and discuss their opinions on new releases while working to form a cumulative score.
Rules
Absolutely no trolling. We want you to have fun and be creative with your reviews, but the rules of ATRL still apply.
Single reviews must be at least 80 words; album reviews must be at least 150 words.
Reviews won't be counted once the final score is posted.
Members can discuss past reviews and recommend upcoming releases to review.
Criticism of reviews is allowed, but personal attacks of members for their opinions is prohibited. For example, saying "your review doesn't make sense because _____" is OK, but "you have bad taste in music" is not.
Scoring
For songs/albums with a review period ending on or before November 9, 2014, there are two compiled scoresthe member score and the modscore.
For songs/albums with a review period ending after November 9, 2014, a Top Critic score is complied in lieu of a modscore.
All reviews must include a score in order to be counted.
All scores must be out of 4, out of 5, out of 10, or use the letter grade scale.
At the end of the review period, final scores will be calculated and posted.
Reviews will not be counted into the final score if they violate the rules.
The Review Process
A single or album will be put up for review if there are at least three people requesting it to be reviewed. Under special circumstances, such as surprise release, this requirement may not apply and whether it is reviewed may be alexanderao's decision.
Promotional singles will not be reviewed until they are released as official singles.
The general amount of time for reviewing a single or album is 2 weeks.
The maximum amount of things that will be reviewed at once is 5.
Scores are only official if the song or album being reviewed receives more than 5 reviews.
Review periods may be extended at the discretion of alexanderao.
Tips For Writing Reviews
The results of my atrlcritic survey showed that among those who completed the survey but have not written a review, approximately 78% said they had not written one because they do not feel like they can write good reviews.
To curb this problem, I've listed some of my tips for writing a review. These are just suggestions, and I don't care if you use them or not. I'm just trying to help out those who are struggling to write a "good" review.
1: Use as many adjectives as possible.
Instead of using vague words like "good," "bad," or "okay," try to describe your feelings towards the song in as much detail as possible. Was the chorus disappointing or irresistible and catchy? Was the beat bland and vapid or pleasant and addictive?
2: Don't censor yourself.
Don't worry what other people will think of your review, because as long as it meets the length requirements and justifies its score it will be counted. Pour out your thoughts on the song or album.
3: If you are reviewing an album, consider a track-by-track review.
Sometimes it's hard to sum up a full album in a paragraph or two, and I know that it works better for a lot of people (including me) to go through each track briefly before wrapping up a review with a quick closing paragraph.
4: Assign a score by using other songs as reference points.
If you have no idea where to start, I would suggest thinking about your favorite and least favorite songs of the year. Your favorites will be in the 8-10 range, and your least favorites (depending on how harshly you review) should be in the 0-5 range. Then, think of songs that are nothing special; neither good nor bad. For most people these fall in the 4-6 range. Find a place for the song you are reviewing along that spectrum.
5: Don't obsess over spelling and grammar.
Your review does not have to flow perfectly or be devoid of spelling errors. Care more about the content of the review, not the way it is presented. Of course, if you feel comfortable with the content you are free to polish up your review. But if you are struggling to even get some content down, don't even think about spelling and grammar.
6: Have a conclusion.
Whether it is with one sentence or two paragraphs, it's always a good idea to wrap up your review with a summary of your thoughts about the song or album, so that the tone of your review is evident. For example, if you pointed out some good things about a song as well as some bad things, a conclusion will help you determine whether the good outweighed the bad, or vice versa. Think of your conclusion as your overall opinion about the song or album. Oftentimes, I find my conclusion helpful in determining a score for my review.
If anybody has any other tips, feel free to share! I want everyone to feel comfortable writing reviews because they really are fun to do!

TRACK: | TITLE: | RATING: | 1. | Chandelier | 6.5/10 | 2. | Big Girls Cry | 3.5/10 | 3. | Burn the Pages | 4/10 | 4. | Eye of the Needle | 2/10 | 5. | Hostage | 6/10 | 6. | Straight for the Knife | 6/10 | 7. | Fair Game | 3.5/10 | 8. | Elastic Heart | 2/10 | 9. | Free the Animal | 1/10 | 10. | Fire Meets Gasoline | 1/10 | 11. | Cellophane | 3/10 | 12. | Dressed in Black | 1.5/10 |
To start within a positive note -- earlier today, I listened to 'Wild Ones'. I loved it, just as I did in 2012. It's amazing vocals, something that stands out, doesn't make Flo Rida seem as comedic as an artist as usual. A perfect song that'll show the face of music in early 2010's. So as today winded down, I opened Sia's new album with that positive note inside. A ride it was, indeed. 'Chandelier' the current single, leading the album's released was something I thought was peculiar and fun but not enough to actually stick with me. Even when viewing the video. The magic couldn't spark once again, and left me with an eery feeling which I'd hope change listening to the rest of the album. Expectations linger -- then fell, as the album continued track by track. The following 3 tracks, 'Big Girls Cry', 'Burn the Pages', and 'Eye of the Needle' left a sour feeling. Disappointment and morale down by the minute in each song. Though the album somewhat took a turn, 'Hostage' and 'Straight for the Knife' turned out to be somewhat decent one could say. The problem was known by then to me -- nice production, drowned out by a monotone singer with a thick accent. Her emotion went nowhere because the 'deepness' was the same exact level on each song. It was almost like a Lana Del Rey, (but not that horrible). It was by the 8th track, 'Elastic Heart' it became a full struggle to make it through the songs. Sia failed to draw me in, I stared down at each track left and my '1000 Forms of Fear' became real. The end of the album was just a struggle, a feeling you get when you're fed up and just want to be finished if the only way to describe.

Drake — 0 To 100 / Catch Up
July 19, 2014
Summary: Drake's newest street single, rumored to be off the upcoming Spring 2015 release "Views from the 6".
Genre(s): Rap/Hip-Hop
Release Date: July 15, 2014
| |
Drake's newest single, '0 To 100 / Catch Up' has me excited for yet again another Drake release. In less than half a decade Drake has graced the Urban market with 3 studio albums, a mixtape, dozens of features, and more. Nothing Drake's done has been bashed as a whole, and this once again lives up to his name. The song, starts off good. Reminiscent to 'Started from the Bottom', but yes, still good. The feel continues for the rest of the song; though the slow ending does throw one off and disinterest a little bit. After listening, I definitely think this is better than 'Believe Me' a feature of his, currently the hottest Urban song. However, I feel this lives up to all of his singles -- and not in the good way, the way they sound the same distinctively with the same random lyrics distinctively. Part of me wishes he'd changed things up; part of me wishes he keeps delivering like this. Overall, a nice quality song so it's not something to lose sleep over.

TRACK | TITLE | RATING | 1. | Uptight Downtown | 4/10 | 2. | Kiss and Not Tell | 5/10 | 3. | Cruel Sexuality | 2.5/10 | 4. | Paradise Is You | 2/10 | 5. | Sexotheque | 2/10 | 6. | Tropical Chancer | 2/10 | 7. | Silent Partner | 2/10 | 8. | Let Me Down Gently | 2/10 | 9. | The Feeling | 3/10 |
Boredom, Waste, and Frustration describes this album. Kick me all you want; call me negative Nancy, or go bonkers — it doesn't change the fact this album is hopeless and goes absolutely nowhere. Now, to be on a positive note, I listen to a past song or 2 from them (artists we review) to put myself into a good mood before doing this. I was listening to 'Bulletproof'; an amazing track. I listened to the 1st track, already knew this album would be different. But it's been years, different can be good — just not for La Roux, perhaps. This album is a snore. Same sounds, same toneless voice, same songs that go absolutely nowhere. Moreso this makes me disappointed at the album releases lately, overall. The album starts out under average, and throughout the rest of the album is just takes a turn for the worst. Nothing in this album was completely unlistenable to the point of 1 or 0 but nothing was interesting to the point of 5 or 6. This album is junk — throwaway, however one would put it. Not a single song sticks, and the public agrees. I was wondering if I was missing out on her, but this just re-assures my thoughts, and I'm sure it would reassure the public's thoughts. Nothing on this album is something one would play all day, jam out to, or even beg a friend to hear. At the end of this scoring, I just remembered her insult towards Kanye. An artist who puts out albums that becomes masterpieces; and I, myself — became offended for Kanye.

Hilary Duff — Chasing the Sun
July 31, 2014
Summary: Hilary Duff's comeback single after a 7 year break, "Chasing the Sun" released at the height of the Summer.
Genre(s): Pop, Bubblegum Pop
Release Date: July 29, 2014
| |
Hilary Duff's comeback single after a break that lasted almost a decade, is released at the height of Summer. The song, 'Chasing the Sun' is a nice, positive song with a free vibe to it. As I listened, I knew however, it wouldn't be something I would be really into. The song is cute for what it is; but nothing to leave a lasting impression. It's kinda corny, but in a way, it's still a Pop song done right that could go well in the right places. To me, it sounds as if this was a Carly Rae Jepsen demo that was thrown at her by her label. Moreso, it was disappointing because it seemed as if she took a step back, despite a break that long. She left us with mature, fierce, and spicy songs like 'Stranger' and 'With Love'. I think something along the lines of 'Slow Down' and 'I Knew You Were Trouble' would've fit her if she was going down the Bubblegum Pop route. However, it was a neat song that was decent, and not something I was turned off by, or on. She's taking a step, now it's time to find the right direction.
5.5 out of 10
Azealia Banks — Heavy Metal & Reflective
July 31, 2014
Summary: Azealia Banks returns to the scene independently, with the new single 'Heavy Metal & Reflective'.
Genre(s): Rap, Witch-Hop
Release Date: July 28, 2014
| |
Another comeback, finds Azealia Banks free from label-hell, and finally fulfilling promises of new music. Though this time, the promise wasn't fulfilled on the quality side. I've loved Azealia Banks — stanned at one point; 1991 EP was pure and the same goes with Fantasea. Even her recent work that has received mixed views such as 'Young Rapunxel' & 'ATM Jam' has been fine in my book. But this doesn't really cut it; this isn't Azealia. She's been declining in quality so quick it's crazy, she's gotten the best of herself. This just doesn't hit me — the cheap beat, the inaudible rapping, everything is so...not her. This just seems so poorly thrown together, including the artwork which is by far the worst I've seen this year. Everything was such a disappointment — did the freedom kill the label slave?

Sia's new album 1000 Forms Of Fear could be considered her selling out by some who think of her as that quirky 'Breathe Me' singer who has tasted success, but it is really her refining the poppier leanings which she first showed off with 2010's excellent We Are Born. Whilst no one song may be as good as a track like You've Changed, it's a far more consistent offering and worthy of all the praise it gets.
Most people will know the lead single Chandelier, and it's incredible vocal performance. Whilst the rest of the album may not feature anything as stunningly shocking, it doesn't have plenty of knockout moments - the glitchy Free The Animal, the Halo-esque Fire Meets Gasoline and the poppy Hostage chief amongst them. But what sets this album apart from her contemporaries is the lyrics - even at her poppiest they remain extremely personal, and often allude so serious issues such as depression which she has battled with over the years.
Overall, this album is a stunning effort from one of pop's most promising stars, and one if the highlights of the year thus far.
