So I'd like to say welcome to my Best of 2013. I'll keep it short and sweet: it's been an interesting year for music, to say the least. We have had a few disappointing albums and a few shocking triumphs. This was perhaps the most diverse year for popular music. Now I have a congregation of various different sounds, acts, etc.
With that being said, let's get this **** started!
Tyler has gone quite a way from being my least favorite artist. It's a matter of just understanding him as an artist and as a person. So when Domo23 came out, it made me more open to trying out Wolf, which turned out to be a pretty good album. It shows off the great and unique production the artist has to offer its fans, and is just a good example of his rapping potential.
#104: Shadow Moses - Bring Me The Horizon
Shadow Moses was the first hardcore/screamo/whatever song that I can saw I honestly liked aside from a few of A Day To Remember's songs (which may pop up in the countdown!). The singer's screaming vocals are actually pretty good in my eyes, and the song sounds intense. I really enjoy the chorus too.
#103: Drake - Started From The Bottom
Started.
Okay, admittedly this isn't even close to the best song on Nothing Was The Same, because quite frankly, in terms of "quality," it's actually in dead last. However, this doesn't mean it is by any means bad. In addition, I can't help but give it a special mention because of the infectious repetition that did, in fact, get stuck in your head for weeks. And you were probably perfectly fine with that, cause it's a carefree and fun song.
#102: Harlem - New Politics
It's hard not to bob your head in bliss when you hear this song. It's so happy, cheery, and makes you wanna dance in the diners like it was the 80's again. It's also a refreshing change of the idea of "Harlem" being in a song, after the dreaded Harlem Shake took the world by storm earlier this year, starting off hilarious and just getting overdone to death.
#101: Sex - The 1975
The 1975 delivered such a solid debut album. Every song is good if not great, and Sex isn't an exception. I can't help but feel a sense of teen angst and struggling romance whenever I listen to this track. They also have phenomenal production in every track of the album. How can you not love the guitar in the background?
Started From The Bottom was such a college themed song since people at my school are in debt trying to make it to the big monies. I like that song only for that reason
We begin this countdown with an example of why Rihanna is my favorite pop artist: she's perhaps one of the most versatile voices in the industry. She can sound great on nearly anything, and can make any song sound better with her inclusion. The original is good, but the remix with Rihanna's inclusion notches up the quality just enough to sneak a spot on the top 100 songs of the year.
#99: Crazy Kids (Remix) - Ke$ha (feat. Juicy J)
I promise, there's only two more remixes on this countdown. It's not necessarily that Juicy J adds anything to this song; in fact, he deteriorates it just mildly. However, the song is one of my favorites from Warrior, and I still jam to it feverishly as a 2013 release. The lack of Ke$ha right now (with the exception of Timber) is quite upsetting, because she still busts out with the best don't-give-a-****-and-go-crazy music around.
#98: Jamba - Tyler, The Creator
As another humorous gathering of Tyler's creativity and rapping capabilities, it seems pretty standard to include this track. It's a standout track on a fairly consistent album, and shows that while he can be obnoxious, he's not the destructive individual some accuse him of being. Of course, it's not like he cares if people think he is.
#97: Last Hope - Paramore
Paramore's self-titled album, in short, is amazing. I could listen straight through for hours without feeling the urge to skip a track. Last Hope is one of the examples of the how diverse Paramore is with their latest album, with the song sounded something straight off of fun.'s record. And that's okay, because it sounds great. While it certainly does not stand alone, Last Hope is a refreshing track off the band's latest effort.
#96: Survival - Eminem
No, the singer is not Skylar Grey. But she sounds great regardless, so it's fine! The hook is definitely the first thing you learn to appreciate, as well as the guitar-led production in the background. Eminem flexes his competence as a flexible hip-hop artist with a rock-influenced hip-hop song. Even if it is simply a Call of Duty song, that promo track is still a solid release from one of rap's finest.
(Just a note, I'm not gonna search for an HQ version of Beyonce's tracks, as it's impossible. Deal.)
Ahh yes, the infamous "Bow Down" finally has grown into a full track. And quite frankly, it's what I wanted it to be. It's unapologetic with a slice of good ol' fashioned Bey-feminism, which is one of the best kinds. The production value is great, and is just one of the ****-ton of amazing songs from BEYONCÉ.
#94: Wake Me Up - Avicii
Yeah, I know. This song is overplayed. But even if it is a bit, it is still a quality song. The folk-influence was still unfamiliar to us all, and was a risky change of pace for Avicii. However, it paid off considerably, with large amounts of success going his way. He is one of the best pop-electronic artists we have, and this song is representative of that.
#93: Birthday - Katy Perry
This song balances innocent celebration with a sexy night in the bedroom quite well in the way only Katy Perry could pull off. This sure-to-be future single boasts a surplus of innuendos and birthday references for an amazing themed music video, and is sure to be played at every high school and college girl's birthday party for years to come.
#92: Timber - Pitbull (feat. Ke$ha)
Let's make one thing clear: I only like this song because of Ke$ha.
Pitbull doesn't really deserve to make the cut for this countdown, however, the chorus is simply too fun, too extravagant, and too wild to be snubbed because of subpar verses. Because in all honesty: who wouldn't want to go to a half-rodeo, half-rave with Ke$ha and get crazy and drink and dance till you pass out?
#91: Glory and Gore - Lorde
Lorde is one talented girl. I know people are quick to dismiss her, but she has a lot of potential, skill, and maturity for someone her age. She shows off her fantastic production and intriguing songwriting in this. It's hard for one to listen to this song and not feel at least a little rebellious.
