After reviewing the complete lineup for this year's VMAs, I was just as flabbergasted as you guys. Then I realized: I think we're slowly entering the middle of the decade; where our main pop stars will slowly phase out and will be replaced with fresh, young blood, like Tori Kelly and Selena.
And I think that's why the music industry (in a way) is such a non-event right now, and it's going to take a few years before things start picking up again. What do you guys think?
uhm.. The music industry is more than just the pop girls ATRL stans for.
uhm.. Don't you think I already know that? As far as this site and the GP is concerned, the main focus is on the main pop girls/guys this decade. I'm just saying history is repeating itself is all.
The performers this year are luckluster because the main pop girls have nothing to promote. All of the awards shows next year are going to be great though.

No. No one of note released this year so the VMA's had no one looking for a promotional spot on the show. I highly doubt Selena, Demi and Tori will become the new wave of Pop Girls. There is nothing interesting about them. Tori can sing but as a whole none of them have any mystique, awe, attitude, personality or distinct talent like what artists like Adele, Bey, Rih, Gaga, Madonna, Mariah, Britney and so much more have had. All the successful Pop Girls have had at least some of them traits. We are in a lull, that is all. Ariana, Tinashe and Meghan will probably be the future generation, but they released last year.
I think it may be some of that with a lot of up and comers in the mix, but it's just a weird dead zone the major acts, too. It's kind of a drought considering the only one really active right now is Taylor -- usually when each VMA rolls around at least a few bigger brand acts are launching or in the midst of eras.
No. MTV just couldn't book the A-listers this year. It's as simple as that.
This tbh. The main heavyweight pop stars are still as big as ever. Maybe because people aren't really buying music the way they used to anymore so it just feels like everything is dwindling out.
Yes because the new girls like Ariana Grande are doing what some main pop girls are doing but with way more success. As acts that stand the test of time will go on, their peers will fade and be replaced by younger artists
No because the VMA's are not a good judgement for the transition as there would be no point in Bey/Gaga/Katy performing because they don't have a single to promote that's why there is a lack of main pop girls. Next year will hopefully be the return of them.
I'm old, so there is no transition period for me. There is always going to be someone for me to listen to since we have yet to make headway with revolutionizing music; better put, artists will be constantly putting spins on already established styles and eras, hardly ever making their own, thus making "new Mariahs" and "new Michaels" and "new Janets", no "new artists"…
