Ultimate K-Pop Girl Group Rate 2 » The winner is...
Welcome to part two of the Ultimate K-Pop Girl Group Rate, a follow up to the first one held at the beginning of the year. While the first one dealt with the most influential groups of the last 10 years, this one takes the biggest groups of the last 5 years ― A Pink, AOA, BESTie, Crayon Pop, EXID, Dal★Shabet, FIESTAR, Girl's Day, HelloVenus, MAMAMOO, 9MUSES, Orange Caramel, RaNia, Rainbow, SPICA and STELLAR ― all of which have made their impact on the K-Pop world in some shape or form. Here we will pit their respective singles discographies against one another to determine the best song to come out of this decades biggest K-Pop girl groups.
BACKGROUND
A Pink made their debut in 2011 with the moderate hit, I Don't Know. Following a string of minor hits and smoldering popularity, interest in the group reach a fervent peak in 2013 when NoNoNo launched itself into the top 3 of the Gaon chart and became one of the top 15 best selling songs of the year. Since then the group's popularity has steadily increased, with later title tracks Mr. Chu, Luv and Remember all reaching the top two. A Pink's signature sugary sweet sound has transformed them into one of the strongest girl groups of this decade.
AOA debuted in 2012 and received little attention until they slowly picked up steam in 2014 with the release of Miniskirt. The song was a sleeper smash, hovering outside the top 10 of the Gaon chart throughout the year, and went on to become one of the best selling girl group songs of 2014. With this new-found popularity they were able to release the three back-to-back top 5 hits, Short Hair; Like a Cat and Heart Attack, with the former two selling nearly one million copies. AOA's signature dance tracks, courtesy of Korean mega-producer BraveSound, have allowed the group to become one of the most popular groups of this decade.
BESTie debuted in 2013, with 3/4 of the members originally belonging to the girl group EXID that debuted one year before. Although the group has yet to have their breakout hit, they have gained a significant following both online and offline. BESTie's strong vocals and electronic tinged pop songs have kept the group on the radar of K-Pop fans.
Crayon Pop was introduced in 2012 with the song Bing Bing, although the group didn't gain a following until the release of Bar Bar Bar in 2013. The song was a viral hit, turning the virtually unknown group into an overnight sensation. Bar Bar Bar was the groups first song to reach the top 100 of the Gaon chart and went on to sell over a million copies. The group followed it up with two moderate hits, Lonely Christmas and Uh-ee. Crayon Pop's EDM and electro-pop songs have allowed the group to sustain a dedicated fanbase and an international following.
EXID debuted in 2012 with the semi-hit song Whoz That Girl, yet did not manage to capitalize on their success with follow-up singles, I Feel Good and Every Night. In 2014 they released Up & Down, which managed to peak at #94 on the Gaon chart. With their popularity at an all time low, the group seemed to be doomed and on their way to suffer the same fate as many fallen girl groups at the start of the decade. However, after the sudden viral success of a fancam of the song, the song was catapulted into the top 10 of digital charts all across South Korea before finally taking #1 on the Gaon chart. Capitalizing on the success of Up & Down, the group released Ah Yeah in 2015. With their popularity at an all time high, the future looks bright for EXID.
Dal★Shabet, the brain-child of the production duo E-Tribe, debuted in 2011 with moderate hits Supa Dupa Diva, Pink Rocket and Bling Bling - with the latter peaking in the top 10 of the Gaon chart. Following their success in 2011, the group has maintained a steady string of moderate hits including 2012's Hit U, Mr. BangBang and Have, Don't Have; 2013's Be Ambitious; 2014's B.B.B; and this year's Joker. Over the course of their many comebacks, Dal★Shabet has managed to place all of their singles in the upper half of the charts by maintaining fan's interest with their zany, snappy uptempo dance tracks.
FIESTAR released their debut single, Vista, in 2012. The follow-up singles to the top 30 peaking Vista haven't been as widely received, but the group has maintained a strong fan-following with their anthemic pop tracks.
Girl's Day made their debut in 2010, however, it was not until 2011's Twinkle Twinkle that the group had their first taste of success. Succeeding singles, Hug Me Once, Oh! My God and Don't Forget Me (among others), did not replicate the success of Twinkle Twinkle yet still sold decently and peaked in the top 15 of the Gaon chart. The group made their return to the top 10 of the charts with the release of 2013's Expectation (as well as the repackage single Female President). Fresh off of their success in 2013, the group hit the jackpot with the back-to-back releases of their smash hits Something and Darling (the groups first and only #1 hit). Girl's Day's powerful, catchy hits have catapulted them into becoming one of the biggest girl groups of their time.
HelloVenus debuted in 2012 with the release of Venus, a moderate top 40 peaking hit. Follow-up singles What Are You Doing Today? and Would You Stay For Tea? performed similarly well, with the latter becoming their highest charting song to date. However, line-up and management changes have impacted the groups current popularity. HelloVenus's transformation from cutesy pop songstresses into flashy video vixens have kept the group interesting for fans and the public alike.
MAMAMOO released their debut single, Don't Be Happy, in 2014 to moderate success. Although only active for a single year, MAMAMOO's impact on the general public and K-Pop fans have earned them the title monster rookies. With their popularity reaching fervid levels, the group released 2015's Um Oh Ah Yeh; which shot into the top 3 of the Gaon chart in only its second week. The groups immense talent and vocal prowess have captured the attention of music fans across the world.
9MUSES made their debut in 2010 with the song No Playboy to a lukewarm reception from the Korean public. The group released a string of moderate hits from 2012's Ticket to 2013's Dolls, Wild, Gun and Glue to 2015's Drama to this year's Hurt Locker. While the group has maintained middling success in their home country, international fans have remained addicted to 9MUSES's funky, experimental pop songs.
Orange Caramel, a sub-unit of super-group After School, debuted in 2010. The group was a resounding success, releasing smash after smash at the start of the decade; starting with Magic Girl and followed-up by A~ing, Bangkok City, Shanghai Romance, Funny Hunny and Lipstick. After taking up promotions in Japan, the group made a triumphant return in 2014 with the release of Catallena; one of the top 10 best selling girl group songs of the year. Orange Caramel's unique image and concept have kept interest in the group high and made the group one of the most successful groups of the last 5 years in their own right.
RaNia made their debut in 2011 with the viral hit Dr. Feel Good. With each subsequent comeback, the group was met with growing public support, Dr. Feel Good (#99) was succeeded by Pop Pop Pop (#66), which was succeeded by Style (#40), which was succeeded by Just Go (#26) in 2013. However, the group hit a wall after their American debut was shelved and multiple line-up changes have left the group inactive for 2 years.
Rainbow released their debut single, Gossip Girl, at the very end of 2009. Their first hit, A, was released in the second half of 2010, selling over 1.6 million copies and peaking in the top 10 of the Gaon chart. The group went on to release two more million selling hits, To Me and Sweet Dream, a year later. After the release of their first Korean full-length, the group spent a year out of the spotlight until the release of Black Swan at the start of 2015. Rainbow's high energy dance hits have pushed the group to become one of the defining girl groups of the first half of the decade.
SPICA debuted in 2012 with the single Doggedly. With growing popularity, the group made their biggest splash in 2013 with the top 10 peaking hit, Tonight. Capitalizing off the success of their first major hit, the group released their first English language single, I Did It, in 2014. SPICA's catchy vocal-driven hits have made them popular among K-Pop fans.
STELLAR made their debut in 2011 with the single Rocket Girl under the tutelage of Eric Mun of Shinhwa. The group was met with little attention and their debut single floundered on the charts. It was not until 2014's Marionette went viral that the group managed to score a moderate hit and garnered attention from K-Pop fans worldwide for their controversial image. STELLAR's sweet, high-impact dance tracks have made them a topic of debate among fans and 'haters' alike.
- Assign each track a score between 1 and 10; decimal point scores are accepted, but only those to the tenth place (i.e 9.5, 8.3, etc.).
- If you assign a score of 0, it will be rounded up to a 1. You may give an 11 to your favorite song, use it wisely!
- When assigning a decimal point score use a period (".") and not a comma (","), it's much easier to calculate scores when they're written this way.
- Be sure to double check your ballots for missing scores. A song with a missing score will be automatically given a score of 1.
- PLEASE use the PM friendly list near the end of this post!! Send your rates to me via private message, don't post them in the thread!
- Rates will be due September 4th, 2015 at 10:00PM EST. You won't want to miss out!
- Don't troll, bitches!
