Global Radio’s Capital FM and Heart brands have not aired music by One Direction since the boy band accidentally thanked Radio One while accepting a Brit award in February that was voted for by Capital listeners.
It has been reported that Global’s executive president and founder Ashley Tabor placed an immediate ban on mentions of One Direction or plays of their songs on-air following the blunder.
The morning after the Brit Awards, Capital FM was due to announce One Direction’s tour dates as part of a co-promotion, but dropped the deal and removed all mentions from its website, Radio Today reports.
One Direction issued a statement apologising for ‘forgetting’ to thank Capital FM listeners.
Figures from Compare My Radio show that in the period between January 1 and February 21 this year, 95.8 Capital FM in London played What Makes You Beautiful 50 times and follow-up single One Thing twice.
According to information from ‘Now Playing’ feeds, between February 22 and April 18 the station hasn’t played a single One Direction track.
Statistics from CompareMyRadio show the single What Makes You Beautiful – the song which won the Best Single prize at the Brits, sparking the controversy, is still the group’s track that is most played by all UK radio stations, six months after its release.
A spokeswoman for Global Radio told Radio Today: “We never comment on playlist decisions.”
Capital FM and it's owner Global Radio are basically the biggest station(s) in the UK.
I'm pretty most of their rabid followers fans aren't of the age that they would even listen to the radio that much anyway, they spend most of their time on Youtube or fighting on Twitter.
