JAKARTA: Pop diva Lady Gaga’s show in Indonesia has been cancelled, her promoters said today after Islamic hardliners threatened “chaos” if she entered the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.
“Lady Gaga’s management has considered the situation minute to minute, and with threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga’s side is calling off the concert,” Minola Sebayang, lawyer for promoters Big Daddy, told reporters.
“This is not only about Lady Gaga’s security, but extends to those who will be watching her,” he added.
Earlier this month Jakarta police refused approval for the show after the hardline Islamic Defenders Front threatened violence if Lady Gaga performed, calling her a “devil’s messenger” who wears only a “bra and panties” on stage.
The promoters had indicated that a deal was being hammered out to tone down the star’s racy show, but her own management vowed no compromise to appease religious conservatives or censors.
Big Daddy president director Michael Rusli said it was “unfortunate” that the show had to be called off.
“For the past few days we have communicated with the government and Lady Gaga’s side. The government has given support, but this is not about the permit,” he said. “The cancellation is really due to concerns over security.” -- AFP

Indonesia, a secular country of 240 million people, has more Muslims than any other in the world. Though it has a long history of religious tolerance, a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.
Hard-liners have loudly criticized Lady Gaga, saying the suggestive nature of her show threatened to undermine the country's moral fibre. Some threatened to use physical force to prevent her from stepping off the plane.
The chairman of Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), which planned to protest against the American artiste's June 3 performance in Jakarta, said earlier: "We will stop her from setting foot on our land. She had better not dare spread her satanic faith in this country. Her style is vulgar, her sexual and indecent clothes will destroy our children's sense of morality. She's very dangerous."
Mariska Renata, a fan who had tickets to the Jakarta show, said: "I'm very disappointed."
She said by bowing to the wishes of "troublemakers," authorities only give them more power. "We are mature enough to be able to separate our own moral values from arts and culture," Renata said.

Hard-line group the Islamic Defenders Front has purchased 150 tickets to upcoming Lady Gaga concert, which it will use to enter the venue and stop the show, a spokesman for the group said on Monday.
“The tickets are original, the price around Rp 400,000 [each],” FPI’s Bekasi chapter chairman Murhali said on Monday as quoted by detik.com.
Murhali had posted on his Facebook account a picture of an FPI member, wearing a turban and sunglasses to conceal his face, holding a ticket.
The photo’s caption said, “We have gotten Lady Gaga tickets, not to watch [the concert] but for us to enter. Whatever will be will be, we’re ready for the risk.”
Murhali told detik.com that FPI was ready to stop the concert, but he stressed that FPI would not attack the audience. The only target was Lady Gaga and her crew, he said.
“Hopefully, the concert is canceled,” Murhali said. “We have sent a letter to Lady Gaga through our friends in Canada.
“We hope [the promoter] will return the money if the concert canceled.”
FPI has previously threatened to intercept Lady Gaga on her way from the airport if she dares set foot in Jakarta.

Lady Gaga delivered a cryptic message about the situation this week. She tweeted that if the show went on as scheduled she would perform alone.

Jakarta Police announced that Monday is the deadline for Lady Gaga concert promoter Big Daddy to file all requirements needed to get a concert permit.
“[Jakarta] Police will wait at the latest until Monday,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said as quoted by detik.com in a press conference on Saturday.
He said the promoter had not filed all the requirements including a work permit for Lady Gaga that must be issued by the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry and a permit from the Tourism Agency of the Jakarta government.
“They only have a permit from the Tourism [and Creative Economy] Ministry,” Rikwanto said.
“The promoter did not make any progress. We will see on Monday whether they have completed the requirements.”
After the promoter files all the requirements, at the latest three days prior to the concert, the National Police will announce whether or not the permit will be issued.
Big Daddy could not be reached for comment.
