Ben's Best of 2012 | Top 30 Songs - 25-24 Now in OP
Hey all! This is the first time I will be doing a "Best of" here on ATRL and I'm very excited to share my thoughts with you all!
I always wanted to do one of these but never felt I had the time, but this year I decided to get into it!
Anyhow, without further ado, here is Ben's Best of 2012, enjoy!
I will do daily posts in segments but also keep this page updated for reference.
30-26
This truly came out of the blue, at least for me. Released early in 2012, this song never got old, from the unforgettable melody that will get stuck in your head for days at end, to the drum & strings section at the end, this song was such a great single from Santigold's second album, 'Master Of My Make-Believe'.
What a rollercoaster of a year we've experienced with Miss Minaj. First she started releasing basic pop songs for hits, like "Starships" and "Pound the Alarm", then went 'back to her roots' for the re-release of a (re-release?). Inbetween this, however, we got this gem. With an unforgettable trap beat, and lyrics to match, everyone will remember the pointless-yet-catchy hook telling us she "Beez In The Trap". This was also one of 2 Chainz' best verses this year, which was good.
When this song came out originally, Marina released an acoustic video on her Youtube, and the impact it had on me was shocking for a pop song. The lyrical content was so relatable, and her vocals shined behind the minimal instrumental. The studio version was on a whole other level, though. The Dr. Luke, Cirkut & Diplo-produced, EDM inspired instrumental gave the song the boost it needed to make it an extremely solid song.
We slow it down for these two. This song was released as the long-awaited first single from The xx's sophomore album, Coexist, and they sure didn't disappoint. The sheer simplicity they are known for shines through in this song, with one guitar predominantly the only instruments behind the haunting vocals. Their talent for musical knowledge really shows with the interesting chord & structure changes throughout the song. A great first single choice as well as it really represented the rest of the album's sound.
This one might catch some people by surprise!! Shown to me by a friend, I first dismissed it purely on the fact that it was sung by the Smith siblings. However, once listening again, I came to appreciate how simply you can make a song sound so great. Jaden's flow is extremely unique, and with some practice I think he could be great. Willow's singing, likewise, but her raw vocal ability shines in the chorus. The real winner in this song is the beat though, how chill! As the chorus builds up, you expect a great breakdown, but instead we go back to the relaxed, 80s disco-inspired beat. A real stand-out for me this year, it surprised me as well.
25-21
This song really hit home with me, I don't know why or how, but I just felt the raw emotion Miguel was feeding into the record. As he shows off his vocal ability in the verses, we hear african-inspired drums providing a simple instrumental to show off the emotion in the song, where as in the chorus, we get a blaring set of instruments to show the tension in what he's saying. This song is amazing from first listen, and definitely the best track on Miguel's sophomore album, "Kaleidoscope Dream", definitely worth a listen!
As the only lyric of the song repeats itself, "Reaching for higher ground", you know this is just what the team of Hudson Mohawke & Lunice, known as TNGHT, are trying to do. Individually, they are relatively unknown DJs in their own respective, but together they came together to make one of the most critically acclaimed EPs of the year. This track is no exception to the EPs standard, with the trap/electro infused beat blaring as the simple melody & lyric repeats itself. This is not a song you will forget, and it will get stuck in your head for days on end, because of how simple yet catchy it is.
