M.I.A isn't an artist defined by hit singles so I think the fact that one of her singles blew up is rather irrelevant. She's not a one-hit-wonder in the typical sense.

I think many people see her as a one hit wonder. That's okay, though. She's not particularly making music that panders to Top 40 radio. "Paper Planes" was a bit of fluke. It randomly took off. I don't think M.I.A. ever expected it to become such a hit.

I wouldn't say so. She was a successful underground artist and is more successful today after Paper Planes, even though it was her only hit.

Well even chart-wise she has become more successful with every album, but i don't think that she expected paper planes to become a hit and does not records songs because she wants them to. I don't think we should label her a one hit wonder since her name is becoming more relevant and her popularity is growing.

But if we're comparing her to other one-hit wonders, I would say yes.
By definition, a one-hit wonder means you simply have only blown up with one song in your career.
That's sort of her case. But the album that she has sold most did not include Paper Planes.

Well she has GMAYL which peaked at number 10 so.. she's not.

She's more an underground artist, than a one hit wonder, Paper Plane went really well because of Slumdog Millionnaire and Swagga Like Us. She's not here for the money, but just say something...
