Making stupid career decisions isn't being risky. Rihanna/Def Jam didn't choose Russian Roulette as lead single because they wanted to be risky, they chose it because they thought it was a sure fire hit to cash in on the Chris Brown situation.
Changing you image from Nice girl to Good Girl Gone Bad isn't risky, it's something every female musician does around the 3rd album. She hasn't really changed image for sound wise since 2007. (No, dying her hair red or getting Instagram didn't change her image.)
-Regardless- being risky doesn't make your music more likely to be remembered so this is a completely pointless discussion.
