Before we start I want to inform y'all on a last minute decision to not include the just released BEYONCÉ album in my lists for the year. As it is extremely new, I am very obsessed with the album and its songs so I'm afraid that without time to properly digest everything and see how the album deals with my quick-to-move-on tendencies, I won't be able to place the songs in a rightful position as of now.
All right, let's begin!
______________
Let's take a look at who just missed out on the party...
#105. WHAT LOVE IS MADE OF - Katy B
#104. DOPE - Lady GaGa
#103. EVENING CEREMONY - Active Child
#102. VACATION - G.R.L.
#101. BRIGHTEST MORNING STAR - Britney Spears
Close, but no cigar~
______________
#100. LAY ME DOWN
Sam Smith
Definitely one of my current favourite male artists in the game, UK's Sam Smith emerged from his hit collaboration with Disclosure as a solo artist whose voice didn't need any production behind it to shine in 'Lay Me Down'. Sam's strong, commanding vocals, especially his killer register blend comes through breathtakingly in the pleading choruses.
#99. KISSES DOWN LOW
Kelly Rowland
For some reason I have never really been able to click with Kelly Rowland's singles till 'Kisses Down Low'. I love the cool, slick production and Kelly's dialogue in the pre-chorus is MAAAYJJJAHH. The chorus lyrics have become i c o n i c in my life already - "I like my kisses down low, make me arch my back, when you give it to me slow, baby just like that", playful and daringly direct.
#98. RIBS
Lorde
The half-awake vocals and drowsy, melancholy beat of the verses is everything. This song is by far my favourite on Lorde's debut. The lyrics are perfect and cleverly written, capturing the fear of growing old, a subject that is rarely touched on in pop music - in fact almost the exact opposite of what most songs talk about.
#97. SATELLITE CALL
Sara Bareilles
What sort of gorgeous song is this tbh? If you have not heard 'Satellite Call', you best go check it out now along with Sara's Grammy nominated album I love this song for its simplicity and its honest and comforting lyrics - "this one's for the one to blame". The spacious production and ascending instrumental hook serve justice to the song's name and message.
#96. CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH
JoJo
From the 28-minute, beautifully raw mixtape, Agápē released days away from Christmas last year, 'Can't Handle The Truth' is a strong, thought-provoking closing track where JoJo draaaags her man for FILTH, calling him out for an ego way too big for his shoes. JoJo's little vocal inflections which are scattered across this track are engaging and create for a deliciously moody finish.
