So we all know Adele is arguably the most successful artist of 2011, in terms of both commerce and critics. She tops both album and single charts on Mediatraffic, breaks countless records, gets a 76 on Metacritic with 34 reviews, and is nominated for 6 Grammy Awards. She basically SLAYS everyone.

In my opinion, the reasons why Adele's so successful is because people are tired of generic dance/pop music so they need something new and fresh, or they simply relate to her songs since she appeals to both adults and teenagers. Her talent is also recognized and appreciated.

Her voice and because her material isn't like other commercial music at the moment. Pop music works in cycles.

I think her appeal to a lot of age groups really help. Also, her songs aren't dance/pop music, but they're still catchy as hell. She also has a killer voice that no one can deny. I agree a little bit that she does separate herself from a lot of what is out there now, i.e., female pop artists who rely on shock and production value as much as if not more than the actual music. I think it's refreshing to see someone like Adele on stage in a simple black dress and simple make-up and hair, singing a song with only a piano but still demand the same attention as other performances that have a lot of pyro.

Or it could just be that she has a kick awesome album.

she's appealing to a wide range of listeners. her music is being played on multiple formats -- i.e. Triple A, Alternative, Rock , Rhythmic, HAC, AC, and not to mention Pop. So I think that she has a better chance of reaching out to other non-mainstream audiences.

This. People love the Gaga, Katy, and Nicki but Adele is easily a throwback to the way many singers used to perform, which is why a lot of older people are taking towards her music. I think younger people are liking her music because it's all about the universal theme of love and getting your heartbroken, that is something that will never get old.

Accessible music that everybody can tap into and feel. Sung by a talented down to earth young woman people can relate to. Its authentic. She appeals to literally all age groups from tweens to senior citizens...this is the key to her outrageous sales.

Great voice, great songs, great melodies, great lyrics, great personality, great honesty....all equals great success.

It's like older women who sneak their way into the New Romance section in store books with those oiled up muscular sexy men sitting on horses or laying down on a beach with exceptionally sexy women like Angelina Jolie on the book covers so they can fantasize away during the reading. They fantasize about the days with their high school sweetheart and how they used to be somewhat decent looking.

Same with Adele's 21. Heartbroken women listen to it so they can forget their current loser lives and remember their former 'hot' boyfriends and their former 'hot' selves.

There are many women in midlife crisis. Adele benefits from that.

She is just like Susan Boyle. She has an amazing voice, which is somewhat uncommon these days. Her looks aren't the typical hot celebs. Her music is far from commercial, yet still catchy and relatable. She wont last long.

how is her music not commercial if its catchy? Thats contradicting. Commercial music doesnt strictly mean dance-pop. She just got the billboard number song of 2011 for goodness sake.

She'll still be slaying long past Katy's fast approaching expiration date.

You know damn well she had decent success before 21 and won two Grammys. It's NOT another Susan Boyle situation. People needs to get over the "She won't last long" like this was her debut and it all was just luck.

Yeah sure hun. Please go find a clue.

1. She is nothing like Susan Boyle. Adele writes her own music and doesn't just sing covers of songs. And although her music isn't dance/pop., she still has a youthful and relevant energy about her that Susan Boyle does not.

2. She'll be here years from now because she's relying on her voice and not anything else, like her looks or youth. The latter will eventually fade, but her voice and musical talent will always be there. She will ALWAYS be respected for her talent.

3. Like someone else upthread has mentioned, just because her music isn't dance pop and isn't played in a club doesn't mean it's not commercial. ....Actually, her music IS played in clubs as remixes.

4. Even though she's not a "typical hot celeb" (I'm assuming you're implying that she's not skinny like a lot of female singers), she's still beautiful and is a classic beauty.
