Mmmm, she was never downplayed anymore than Madonna honestly. It was the whole superbowl incident that literally halted any kind of praise or industry recognition from then there onward. Even Madonna has been inducted into this thing, meanwhile Janet has been brushed aside. As years move on, generations coming up are seeing her as just a has-been, which is exemplified by the way in which ATRL kids totally disregard her and only credit Madonna. But in actuality for decades Janet has been one of the biggest female artists of all time.

I agree but nowadays Janet's accomplishments, talent, and influence is pretty much totally brushed off by mainstream media, usually in favor of Madonna like you said. It's almost as if she never existed. Like Control and Rhythm Nation never happened. Like the fact that several of the biggest female performers of the new millenium Britney Spears and Beyonce in perticular, are modeled after her, especially Britney.
Even the CEO of the hall of fame himself said

"One could say if Madonna is in, Janet Jackson should be in," Harris says. "She dominated that era and has been such an inspiration to today's stars.

**She likely won't get her recognition until she dies and even then it's debatable. Donna Summer still doesn't even get the credit she is due besides that "Queen of Disco" label.
