PEDRO. The Elusive Best Of '14: The Final 10 Elusive Singles
Hello ATRL World & Welcome To My Best Of 2014!
It has been quite some time since I ever concluded a Best Of list. It's not like I don't like it or whatever (it is my favorite time of the year, actually!), it is just that, as a student, the end of December and the beginning of January overlap with the hardest time in school (exams, deadlines...) but... Guess what! I graduated this year, I got my journalism degree, and I have more time in my hands. Nonetheless, I have to admit it was also my fault. I have always been very ambitious when it comes to my Best Of. I love to have a beautiful presentation, a long and various lists and then I just run out of time.
This time around, things have changed and here I am to present to all of you the music that made my year run faster and better.
Title Meaning
When explaining this title, I obviously need to pull my Mariah attitude and if you actually heard her latest record 'Me. I Am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse' you'll understand the following quote: "Please don't judge me for such a simplistic title", she says and I quote. But this title became iconic over here and I don't want to sound pretentious at all but I guess it represents my attitude towards my musical taste. I just think my taste is better than everyone's. Well, who doesn't? This title isn't just about Mariah Carey and her iconic album title. I also had to bring my Shakira-stan blood and include a reference to her latest album, 'SHAKIRA.' and voilá: 'PEDRO.'
I'd also take a moment to say that I KNOW yellow isn't a color that much people are fond on but I am crazy about it. Yellow is my favorite color and my layout may remind you of a bee (Hello, Beyhive!) but I just love the mix of both colors.
Countdowns
As I said previously, I have been very ambitious before and I don't want to repeat the mistake. This year, my best of will be modest and have only the important categories:
- Top 15 Albums Of 2014
- Top 15 Videos Of 2014
- Top 10 Choreographies Of 2014
- Top 65 Singles Of 2014
I still am undecided if I am doing a Top Artists or not. As Britney Spears would say: "you're going to have to wait and see."

PEDRO. The Elusive Best Of '14: The Elusive Videos (15-11)
Welcome To My Best Of 2014!
I am ready. My Elusive Best Of 2014 is about to start as I said, there will be four categories (maybe five) and I'd like to present them in a specific order: videos, choreographies, albums and singles.
I feel like we are here for the music and only then for the little extras such as music videos or choreographies, so the most valuable aspects should come in the end. We are having a small update today because I had (as you probably saw) to do what Britney Spears didn't which is PROMOTE and had to comment in severall best ofs. I am obviously tired and hope to get love back. Here we go!
Before I get things started, I need to say that 2014 was a very WEAK year when it comes to music video. I don't know what it is but it looks like artists don't want to spend a lot of cash with their videos, I feel like they repeat the concepts over and over again and there's lack of originality. I seriously hope 2015 is a better year for music videos. Now! Before I reveal the top 15, I have two videos I really like but didn't make it.
| Gwen Stefani - Baby Don't Lie
Gwen didn't exactly serve the comeback we were expecting... At least when it comes to videos, since 'Baby Don't Lie' is a very good song. I tend to love things people hate and while I don't love this, I really like it. I don't know how, I don't get bored watching it, I love the visuals and the abstract sets. There's probably a very interesting meaning behind this video that one day I will understand. Besides, Gwen looks so beautiful! I couldn't resist. |
| Selena Gomez - The Heart What It Wants
While not being a overproduced video, this video talks to me in a way that none of the others in the list do. I see so much reality and honesty in it and if she's actually faking her emotions, she is a great actress. I really believe every tear she drops in this video. It is very simplistic but its honesty makes it worth watching. The intro is just amazing. |
Director: Hannah Lux Davis
Favorite Part: Nicki Minaj's entrance.
Stars: ***
I never thought I'd include this video in the list but I ended up giving it another chance and while it isn't amazing, it isn't that bad either. I just feel there is so much 'Can't Hold Us Down' influences in it. The first scene with Jessie J, the girl power concept and lack of originality bothers me. Nonetheless, I love the visuals and the outfits, specially that beautiful yellow skirt of Nicki Minaj. Talking about her, she is the reason this video got in. Her part takes it to another leve. Queen Nicki dominates it.
Director: Declan Whitebloom
Favorite Part: The 'fake' selfie.
Stars: ***
This is another simple video. There isn't much about it but I love the story. It is very passionate and interesting. One can NOT resist to know what she is going to do to find that guy... Besides, it kinda gave me new ideas to stalk (in a healthy way!) guys I see and find attractive... Pretend I am taking a selfie! Thanks Hilary!
Director: Hannah Lux Davis
Favorite Part: The space set.
Stars: ***
If on one hand we have a very simplistic video from Hilary Duff, on the other we have a very well produced video from Paris Hilton. Also, if on one hand we have a very cute concept in 'All About You', on the other hand there's no concept in 'Come Alive'. This is the reason this video is raking lower than the others. I completely love every single set. Paris looks flawless and the sets are beautiful but at the end of the day there's just a bunch of images. I wish there was more of a concept.
Director: Jaume de Laiguana
Favorite Part: When Milan kicks the ball.
Stars: ***,5
I can't believe this was directed by Jaume De Laiguana! The same person who directed 'Sale El Sol' or 'Rabiosa'. It's amazing how this guy can direct an AMAZING video such as this one or 'Don't Bother' and then direct some mediocre ones. I love 'La La La (Brazil 2014)'. I love the production and how it beats so effortessly the original version, 'Dare (La La La)'. Shakira looks flawless and I love how they included a reference to every country in such an original way! This must be the best worldcup music video!
Director: Jessy Terrero
Favorite Part: The boat scene.
Stars: ****
J.Lo took a risk and nailed it. Let's be honest, no one ever objectifies the men and Jennifer did it in such a great way. You may think me (and gays) love this video because there are a billion of hot guys but, in my case, that's wrong. The video is good, nothing great but good. BUT the concept is flawless and so original! Some artists should take notes on how to be a feminist in an original way! Great job, J.Lo!

I didn't like The Heart What It Wants at first but now I love it! and I agree with you, "Baby Don't Lie" was a disappointment, it wasn't first single material imo, specially when is your comeback single after 6 years of hiatus!
Come Alive is my guilty pleasure
I like La La La! and Bang Bang used to be my jam too but right now I can't stand that song anymore

Great choices so far!
Come Alive really reminded me of Rihanna's Only Girl video.
JLO looks smoking in I Luh Ya Papi, especially for a 45 year old.
Can't wait to see the rest.
