As Maroon 5's "Makes Me Wonder" (A&M/Polydor) started a second week in the runners-up spot on the new U.K. singles chart, there was major consolation for the Los Angeles band, who saw its second album, "It Won't Be Soon Before Long," go straight to No. 1. Meanwhile, "Umbrella" (Def Jam) by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z began its second week atop the singles survey.
Maroon 5's first album, "Songs About Jane," which now has estimated worldwide sales of eight million, was released in June 2002 and first entered the British chart in January 2004. It went on to spend a single week at No. 1 in its 28th chart week at the end of August. Its successor steals the crown this week from Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" (Warner Bros.), which dips to No. 2 as Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black" (Universal Island) jumps back 6-3 in its 30th chart week.
New in the album top 10 are British pop vocalist Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Trip the Light Fantastic" (Fascination/Polydor) at No. 7 and Ozzy Osbourne's "Black Rain" (Epic) at No. 8.
The Cribs, the English rock trio from Wakefield in West Yorkshire, opened at No. 13 with their third album "Men's Needs Women's Needs Whatever," produced by their Domino labelmate Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand. The single "Men's Needs" reached No. 17 last week. California band Hellogoodbye opened at No. 17 with "Zombies Aliens Vampires Dinosaurs" (Drive Thru) as the single "Here (In Your Arms)" single (Drive Thru) rose 5-4. Simply Red made a strong 38-16 move with their current "Stay" album (simplyred.com) and another 1980s chart veteran act, Erasure, debuted at No. 29 with "Light at the End of the World" (Mute).
The singles chart had no top 10 debuts, but several tracks edged back in the right direction. In addition to Hellogoodbye's single, these included "Cupid's Chokehold" (Atlantic) by Gym Class Heroes (6-5), Akon's "Don't Matter" (Universal) (7-6), "Give It To Me" (Interscope) by Timbaland featuring Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake (9-8) and Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" (Arista) (14-11).
There were also climbs for former Sugababe Mutya Buena's "Real Girl" (Fourth & Broadway/Universal Island), up 11-9, and Leeds-based rock act the Pigeon Detectives with "I'm Not Sorry" (Dance To The Radio), which raced 55-12. "I'm a Flirt" (Jive) by R. Kelly featuring T.I. and T-Pain climbed 47-18 and "Everything Is Average Nowadays" (B Unique/Polydor), the second single from Kaiser Chiefs' "Yours Truly Angry Mob" album, jumped 61-19. British rapper Dizzee Rascal opened at No. 20 with "Sirens" (XL Recordings).
The Linkin Park album succeeds Michael Buble's "Call Me Irresponsible" (Reprise) at No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums, while Beyonce & Shakira's "Beautiful Liar" (World Music/Columbia) is in its fourth week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
