BoTB 90s Style Week 11: Just Confide in Juicy Dreams
Ignoring these first two, any of these songs could be my eight pointer this week. The bottom two should be easy - choosing between eight - three will be hard.
Monica, performing For You I Will Youtube link
Nine Inch Nails, performing We're In This Together Youtube link
Bjørk, performing It's Oh So Quiet Youtube link
Madonna, performing Ray of Light Youtube link
The Notorious B.I.G, performing Juicy Youtube link
No Doubt, performing Just a Girl Youtube link
The Cranberries, performing Dreams Youtube link
Kylie Minogue, performing Confide in Me Youtube link
For those brand new to the game - listen to all eight tracks. Comment on them, and rank them. Eight is your favorite, one is your least favorite.
Have fun!

Juicy good choice.
Ray of Light good choice.
For You I Will? Really? I guess.....
I'm Just A Girl is fine.
It's Oh So Quiet.
Excellent choice for Kylie.

*looks down the list...and sees the NIN choice*
Yeah, I already know what my eight is going to be. Choosing 7-1 is going to be a BITCH, though.

Monica, performing For You I Will
Beautiful delivery from Monica and in the contrary of Toni's last entry the song doesn't drag to go nowhere and doesn't sound dated. So smooth, this is the RnB I like. 5
Nine Inch Nails, performing We're In This Together
This caught me off guard, I was absolutely sure I will hate it, against all odds I even consider it to be my best rated song at some point. The chorus is bloody amazing, I like the atmosphere of the song. The agressivity the singer puts in his every words amaze me when it is something that usually puts off. Maybe I'm overrating it since I didn't know the song before. 7
Bjørk, performing It's Oh So Quiet
Dilemna of the week. My favorite song of the week yes, but does it really deserve the first place when you know the Betty Hutton's version is superior and that Bjork's cover while being super is not on par and not so different to the original? So I'll just rate the song itself for what it is, absolutely breathtaking. The oddness of Bjork's accent and the sensation of bipolarity (one moment she screams on top of her lungs and another she just whispers) add that special thing to the song. 8
Madonna, performing Ray of Light
The melody is amazing, the feeling you get from it is good too. The amazing production and the melody give the song that small haunting aura that fails to be carried by the singer herself. I feel nothing from the words she pronounces, it is just so cold and souless. Good song nevertheless. 2
The Notorious B.I.G, performing Juicy
I don't like him but the song is fantastic. 3
No Doubt, performing Just a Girl
Good song, the synths are great and I like the lyrics. 1
The Cranberries, performing Dreams
Another fantastic song, I don't know how it ended up so low. The part when she screams "laaaaahhlaahhh" always gets me. Fantastic. 4
Kylie Minogue, performing Confide in Me
I love it, unlike Madge in ROL, Kylie carries the song perfectly, I feel it. Beautiful song, but just no at that high note at 5:27 though. 6

8) Nine Inch Nails - We're In This Together (the best song this BotB has seen? Seems like a distinct possibility)
7) Björk - It's Oh So Quiet
6) No Doubt - Just A Girl
5) Kylie Minogue - Confide in Me
4) The Cranberries - Dreams
3) Biggie Smalls - Juicy
2) Monica - For You I Will
1) Madonna - Ray of Light (I know, I know, but this song has ALWAYS annoyed me, even dating back to when it first came out. Among Madonna's singles, it's easily among her five to ten worst)

It's time.
Ray of Light - When I was a kid, I thought this was the best thing ever. On record, removed from its still incredible video, it suffers a bit. It sounds very late 90s, and unlike other songs this week, that's not a compliment. I still relate to the themes in the song, and Madonna sounds quite good here - but it could use a little refurbishing. 2
It's Oh So Quiet - So not what Bjork does, on the surface - but man, does she sell it. It's nice to hear her in a setting outside of the world she's created for herself. 5
Just a Girl - That bassline, and its implications for Cali pop and ska intersecting, is ridic. It's hard to separate this from my first memory of it; I had never seen anyone who looked like Gwen on MTV. I still think this is one of the best singles, and just such a great statement of intent. 4
For You I Will - So very 96 cheesefest. This was from Space Jam. It reeks of Diane Warrenisms (it was written by her, right?) Monica deserves better than this. 1
Dreams - Oh, how I wish this could be my eight-pointer. Just, so gorgeous. Twinkly without being twee, and with such earned sentiment. The best vocal I've ever heard Dolores O'Riordan deliver, soft without lacking substance. The dual harmonies are the icing on the cake. 6
We're in This Together - Oh ****. If this wasn't such a stacked week, this would be higher. First time hearing it, and I'm intrigued. 3
Juicy - The best song of the week. Such a great sample, which is unusual to say about anything Diddy was involved with. Biggie was on another level; I can't think of that many rappers in history who could sound so empathetic - or sympathetic, for that matter. Anyone listening instantly roots for him; it's almost impossible not to.
I do have to confess that I like the radio edit better. 8
Confide in Me - This might contain an even smarter choice of sample than Juicy. (It's sampling a track from The Doors, people.) I think, as a full three-dimensional single - she's maybe not released anything that's bettered this. In many ways, it hasn't aged at all - something like this on pop radio today would still sound new. It does lag a bit in the middle, but the opening and the ending are just perfection. 7

The first four to me are just utterly superlative. The others have aspects both intriguing and lacking, but they lack that spark of excellence.
Madonna, performing Ray of Light: 8
All I care is how this song makes me feel, and it's pure sonic euphoria. Hands down, one of the best of the '90s.
The Notorious B.I.G, performing Juicy: 7
Even this California boy can't deny how epic the production here is—it feels like the rags-to-riches story that Biggie is telling. High-concept rap art.
No Doubt, performing Just a Girl: 6
It's no wonder this song turned No Doubt into superstars, because that base line is perfection and Gwen's vocal performance is phenomenal. Together, they grab you from the first second and never let you go, making you feel the song's impassioned frustration with every fiber of your being (quite literally—I can't help but want to dance around whenever I hear it).
Bjørk, performing It's Oh So Quiet: 5
Just a genius use of musical dynamism. And the retro influences are used so well that the song feels ageless. (Also, the video is utterly brilliant.)
The Cranberries, performing Dreams: 4
I love Dolores O'Riordan's vocals, but the song is not my favorite. I feel like it's a missing a sense of meaning among the casually ethereal loveliness.
Nine Inch Nails, performing We're In This Together: 3
That very industrial production style can be overwhelming sometimes, but it's a little more scaled back and intriguing here. I don't know if I'm ever going to love that screamo delivery, but I did feel something more emotionally genuine than just "noise" on this track.
Kylie Minogue, performing Confide in Me: 2
Ooh, those electronic strings are fierce! Unfortunately, I think the vibe stalls somewhere between intoxicating and boring.
Monica, performing For You I Will: 1
Well, it's definitely better than "I Believe I Can Fly."

Madonna Ray of Light
Time hasn't been kind to this one, yet as dated as this one is sounding in its production, I can't bring myself to knock it. Silly as it might sound in 2011, this was quite an ambitious and cutting-edge project in for Madge and William Orbit 1998. Truthfully, Willam hasn't done anything that tops this track since. (8)
The Cranberries Dreams
Impossible not to love. Impossible not to love. (7)
Kylie Minogue Confide in Me
A gem. What track on Kylie Minogue isn't? (6)
Bjork It's Oh So Quiet
It absolutely shouldn't work. It works absolutely perfectly. Wish I could rank it higher. (5)
Nine Inch Nails We're In This Together
This has aged incredibly well, in the sense that it doesn't really fit with any current trends in alternative, but there's some distorted synthiness (bit crushed to pieces and mixed with pute white noise) that, to my ears, reminds me of every single track on Born This Way. (Like seriously, there's not a single track on the entire album that doesn't have some muddiness in the mixdown, except for maybe, I don't know, "Yoü and I".) I'm familiar with little more than NIN's singles catalog, but if this is any indication of their talents, I feel encouraged to investigate their work a little further. (4)
Notorious B.I.G. Juicy
I'm never one to rag on a hook, but how much better would this be without that female refrain? (3)
No Doubt Just a Girl
Just a good song. (2)
Monica For You I Will
Cute. (1)
