Quote:
Couples that choose civil partnership will have the same rights as married couples and the same will apply to same sex couples, according to a new draft law to be tabled in Greek parliament.
According to the bill released by the ministry of justice, same sex couples can choose civil partnership in order to cohabit and enjoy full rights as married couples. However, they don’t have the right to adopt children. Adoption by same sex couples will be discussed in the future, according to the ministry.
Civil rights, inheritance issues, taxation and public employee law rights will apply to couples that prefer civil partnership, Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos stated.
The same bill includes the establishment of a National Council Against Racism and Intolerance, while other amendments include changes in racism laws, such as the definition of race crime will not only apply to racist motives but also to racist causes, such as race or religion discrimination.

A new draft bill that would give full civil partnership rights to same-sex couples is to be tabled in parliament amid reactions from the Church of Greece.
The explanatory memorandum emphasizes the need for official recognition of same-sex couples based on the principles of citizen equality and respect for diversity, as they are already protected by the Greek Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.
“It is the state’s obligation to guarantee equal rights for all, as a fundamental principle of state, international and European law, which is at the core of the modern concept of public policy, “he said.
The explanatory report notes the censure on Greece by the European Court of Human Rights because the previous law excludes same-sex couples from entering a civil partnership.
It also stressed that Greece is one of the last countries in Europe where there is no legal framework for official recognition of the relationship between persons of the same-sex. This is causing problems in practical issues such as banking, insurance, or taxation.
In the explanatory memorandum it is noted that the bill does not pose a threat to the institution of marriage and other constitutional rights and moral values.
The voting of the bill is expected to take place by December 22.
Church of Greece reacts to civil partnership law for same-sex couples
The Holy Synod decided to adhere to its previous position, namely that the Church of Greece denounces alternative family forms because they are a devaluation of the holy concept of the Christian family. It is also a devaluation of human life, turning the holy institution of marriage to a simple civil transaction, according to the Church of Greece.
Controversial Kalavryta Bishop Ambrosios took it a step further verbally attacking homosexuals and members of parliament who have stated that they will vote in favor of the bill.
Using very offensive language against lawmakers, Ambrosios calls on Greek people to, “Spit on them! Deprecate them! Vote against them! They are not human! They are freaks of nature! Mentally and spiritually sick! They are mentally insane! … Don’t hesitate, then! Wherever you see them, spit on them! Don’t leave them in peace! They are dangerous!” Ambrosios wrote in his blog.
