"Writing" your own songs (with a host of co writers, of course) is considered as an important talent on ATRL. And yet considering the cringeworthy, and sometimes downright embarrassing lyrics that pop girls have come up with in the past, is writing your own songs a real indication of talent?

I mean, it gives someone more credibility if they can write their own material (or help write it), but it is in no way indicative of the quality of the material. I'd easily take a really good song that was written by six people for a singer over a mediocre song that the singer helped write themselves.
On one hand, song writing (particularly composing and arranging, rather than just lyrics) is pretty difficult actually, any pop girl who does it and can actually make good music/a hit deserves respect.
OTOH, yeah, some people act like writing any song is some automatic trump card, when there are some pop girls (won't name names ) who have some barely intelligible lyrics right now, and I'm not sure if they wrote the entirety of the song, or again, just the lyrics.
