Rihanna's manager: Artists need to release on a yearly basis
RIHANNA'S MANAGER:
Quote:
The music industry routine of releasing a new album every three to four years is no longer viable, Rihanna's manager has argued.
"Kids want new material all the time," said Jay Brown, who has overseen the singer's career since she signed as a teenager.
"I think you become disposable when you put out an album every three years."
Brown was speaking as Rihanna, 23, prepared to launch Talk That Talk, her sixth album since 2005.
She has sold more the 20 million albums worldwide, recording new tracks in mobile studios as she tours, allowing for an almost unbroken schedule of annual releases.
"It's not like we force her," said Brown. "She goes into the studio because she likes it."
The star's manager, who works for Jay-Z's Roc Nation company, added that he felt albums had become bloated, with unnecessarily long running times.
"Nobody, when they're buying an album, wants to skip over tracks," he said.
"If there are too many songs, you dilute what you're trying to do."
He pointed to Sarah McLachlan's 1997 album Surfacing as an example of an ideally-paced record. The Grammy-winning work featured just 10 tracks and clocked in at a compact 41 minutes.
It was released at a time when record companies, keen to make CDs look like value for money, packed out discs to their maximum, -minute capacity.
More recently, some of the biggest-selling international hits, including Amy Winehouse's Back To Black and Adele's 21, have featured similarly slight running times.
Rihanna has followed suit. Talk That Talk, is just over 35 minutes on the standard edition.
"When we were deciding the tracks to put on there, I wasn't thinking about minutes and seconds," said Brown. "I just wanted to make sure it was all hits."
The album, which was played to journalists in London on Thursday afternoon, continues Rihanna's fusion of eurodance, R&B and reggae.
Early tracks maintain the uptempo club feel of her recent number one single, We Found Love, while the Bajan singer's predilection for raunchy lyrics is unabated on songs such as Roc Me Out and Watch N' Learn.
The record is released by Mercury on 18 November.

I don't think every artist needs to release on a yearly basis...but I see no harm in doing it if it's right for that artist

40 - 45 minutes is the norm, I would say.

[Interesting points... but it's not true for every artist or every genre.]

It's not mandatory for EVERY artist.
But if an artist wants to, why not?

Not necessarily, but if there's a high demand for that certain artist's music then I don't see why not.
I wish my favorite bands release new music every year. However, if the music quality won't be as good as its predecessor, I'd rather wait long time for a perfect album than get new music every year that wouldn't satisfy me.

1. I strongly dislike when an album has less than 13 songs; anything 12 or under seems skimpy.
2. I strongly dislike when an album is created to contain "nothing but hits."
3. I prefer when artists take 2-3 years to put an album together.

It's not for every artist.
If Rihanna wants to do it then she can and she does.

I would definitely say that for us, as Rihanna stans. But that may be partially due to the fact that we've grown accustomed to it.

I think it's the other way around. Someone who releases an album every year just for the sake of relevancy, is clearly disposable.

Not every artist needs to release albums yearly, but I would be lying if I said I would be irritated if they all did.

35 minutes
As far as the yearly release issue goes, it's not normal for an artist to release an album every year. Why? Because most artists take years to come up with their hooks and melodies and write their lyrics so they are genuine. Or at least, that is how it used to be for most artists. With Rihanna, she has entire camps of songwriters writing her songs (I know that she cowrote 4 songs on the standard edition, but it was always alongside three other prominent songwriters) and producers like Dr. Luke and Stargate pumping out their familiar sounds. This equation is nearly fool-proof. You match the best writers with the biggest hitmaking producers with a pretty face and sass from Rihanna and you have another album full of hits and another year of monetary success for the artist and label. As a music fan, while I like some of Rihanna's songs, this is one of the many reasons why I will never call myself a fan of hers. She's less of a music artist and more of a facade behind which all of the actual talent congregates and filters through.

A normal album, with atleast 12 or 13 songs would be atleast 60 minutes.
