Despite the successes of Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill and the like, Female Rappers have oft been forced to ‘play the back’ in the game that is Pop music.
Indeed, perhaps the fault of their labels and management teams, Femcees have very rarely enjoyed chart success with their own material, riding on the backs of hits released by the commercially potent acts whose music they feature on.
Now, in what can only mark the beginning of the end to this pattern, Rap Queen Nicki Minaj has extended her lead as one of Pop’s highest selling debutantes.
This time, on the UK Singles Chart.
Despite lacking a video or its own designated promo campaign, the Rapper’s ‘Pound The Alarm‘ is now one of the fastest rising singles in UK chart history, released by an artist of any genre.
For, in the space of two weeks it has risen by 118 spots, forcing itself up the chart by 61 places last week and a further 27 this week, set to hit the UK top ten by next week if its leapfrogging trend continues.
As if that wasn’t enough, her sophomore LP ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’ has risen by 8 spots in the country’s album chart placing it at #20,while it’s predecessor ‘Pink Friday‘ rocketed by 15 chart positions this week- 84 weeks after release.
It would have been such a great achievement if she broke this record with a HIP HOP Track not a generic over produced song =/ but I guess this is why she sold out in the first place
Hmm. I find it interesting that no other single has ever risen like that. Is this from The Official Chart Company? Not trying to dowse her, but no immediate source makes it sketchy. Congrats to her if so, "PTA" was one of the few I used. (even if it's not really the 'femcee hip-hop' like the ones they mentioned first sentence).

My bad. It's from TGJ.
Nicki's one of the biggest artists in the UK at the moment, so I'd expect this.

I agree with the comments though, the fact is that Nicki can release Automatic as the next single and it'd still be classified as a Hip-Hop song on the charts.
