Here I'm going to begin counting down my Top 70 Songs of 2012. The list is based on my top played tracks of the year, but ordered their respective brackets (plays) by my preference today compared to maybe at a time I enjoyed the song and don't so much now or vice versa. + you can click the banners to check the respective song. So, let's get started.
"Mercy" was nice, but "Clique" had me feeling some kind of way when it first premiered. Big Sean did his usual, slaying with a tease-like approach.. Jay-Z fulfilled the middle step-brother role, setting up for Kanye's epic near two-minute finish -- similar to "Monster" -- which just completed the song for me.
I first started getting into A$AP around March/April, fell in love with his mixtape cuts and then further became intrigued when he appeared in "National Anthem". "Goldie" previews what we'll finally get to hear come January 15th from his official album, and it's a pretty decent track with his usual Southern rap influence and East Coast flow.
John Mayer's first singles never really capture me, it's always the ones that follow and pretty much every other song on the full album that captivate. However, "Shadow Days" is no different to "Waiting On The World To Change" or "Who Says" is that it's a great track so here it is. It's great to hear him coming to terms and peace after all the things that happened during and after 'Battle Studies' (looking at you Taylor).
How epic is this song? Easily one of my favorite highlights of the year, if it isn't even one of my top played. It dropping right after her Madonna hype, the unforgettable video (MTV can officially die).. it was just a huge moment. Unfortunately, I'm assuming, M.I.A. is still on the "I don't want to mainstream"-thing and therefore didn't really take advantage of everything that was happening for her at the time. I'm still waiting on the full album, however..
A few other cuts from 'Kin' make the list, so we reach "kill" here first. I've seen a lot of comments say that these songs are nothing without the visuals, or that the mystery of her not-actually 'Bionic' era is what made her intriguing. But for me, I can honestly play this song and other tracks from 'Kin' daily at my own discretion. The chorus in this one is what takes it to another level, then the orgasmic little breakdown if you can call it that. We'll see more of them along the way.
