In the late 1980s, a new sound in R&B music was hitting the radio airwaves: new jack swing. According to the esteemed
Wikipedia Encyclopedia, new jack swing "fuses the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of hip-hop and dance-pop with the urban contemporary sound of R&B". While Janet Jackson was an early pioneer of the new sound with 1987's
Control, it took a little while for the white girls to catch up (they're always a little behind, it seems). By 1991, new jack swing began to be incorporated into the hit dance-pop records of the day. This is where our rate finds its focus. Three pop superstars of the day, Paula, Kylie, and Madonna, all released albums with elements of new jack swing in some songs. We will be rating the songs from these albums to determine who was the best swagger jagger of the early-90s dance-pop scene.
