Billboard: Hip-hop needs Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks delivered a career-boosting, drama-free set during her afternoon slot at Coachella on Friday (April 10). The Harlem rapper, who's become known more for her online spats and controversy-stirring comments than her music, gave what could be her most electrifying performance to date.

Banks proceeded to rip through singles "Heavy Metal and Reflective," "Ice Princess" and "Chasing Time." But what the show proved is that apart from all the drama -- something she exasperatedly moans she's "tired" of on "Yung Rapunxel," during which she barked through a megaphone -- Banks is a true musician. Few of the other acts during the Friday performances bent the boundaries between rap and a litany of other genres, from witch-hop to surf-pop, with the same unflinching confidence and actualized artistry. If Banks had anything to prove, she didn't need to, and she knew it.

Even so, it's hard to separate the art from the artist, and it's impossible not to feel somewhat apprehensive about Banks. A truly divisive character, she's so rightly confident in her music that it's easy to push it aside and judge her solely on actions alone. But in an industry where male artists like Kanye West are lionized for being as outspoken, Banks gets the short straw. It's unfairly clear that she's marginalized because of her gender, something she's personally bemoaned, and she has to work harder than any of her peers to get the respect she admittedly deserves.
And if anything, her Coachella set -- for those in attendance, at least -- proved her worth. Hip-hop needs Azealia Banks. After a clunky rendition of "Nude Beach a Go-Go," a confounding inclusion on her album and her performances, she left with the sparky "212," the tongue-twisting anthem that put her on the map. The crowd went wild -- more than for anyone at the festival so far. Banks surely has her issues, but she reaches full potential when she lets them go.

Funny, considering her biggest hit has a house beat.

I think that's exactly why Billboard said it. A lot of hip hop is basic and repetitive nowadays. She offers something different.

Not you being the first to post lmfaoo a non stan who hates her.
OP: True, we all know this she can outrap almost every female/male rapper, and she can outsing them too. And she's intelligent and her lyrics are clever and different.

And pop music doesn't need Lady Gaga as 2012-15 and Artpop's sales and tour gross have proven.

You're the type of person who listens to songs strictly for the beat huh? Hip-Hop can literally be on any type of beat. Queen Latifah heavily used Jazz music to rap on in the 80's and early 90's.

I have a lot to say about Azealia Banks + hip hop, because I don't know if anybody else remembers, but in 2012 she said some things about the genre, and what she said made it clear that she doesn't give a **** about hip hop. I'm not going to go into this as I'll end up typing paragraphs, but basically I know she's fake. She should stick to her house stuff (which is pretty good anyway), but now that hip hop is successful again she's trying to get involved, but it's so hypocritical of her. I know if in a few years we go back to 2012 times where hip hop can't get you a hit she'll be happy to abandon it again.

What do you mean? She never said anything about Hip Hip she said she doesnt want to be in the "rap game" which is completely different. Shes never labeled her music hip-hip and never will because she knows that she uses more than just one genre in her songs.

No it doesn't. Iggy already saved hip hop. No need for Banks to tarnish it.
