my gosh, 2007 has been really great so far. tons of quality singles (RUBYRUBYRUBYRUBYYYYYYYYY), and also quite a few great albums.
here are my top 3 (and one close call) favorite albums of 2007 so far.
The Good The Bad & The Queen
I knew this album would be good, but not
this good. if you don't know the lineup yet then here it is: Damon Albarn on vocals, Paul Simonon of the Clash, Simon Tong formally of the Verve, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and produced by Danger Mouse. just a ****in A+ lineup.
it's very mellow and bleak music. the only time the album goes upbeat is the jam session at the end of the Title track.however the mellowness really works. Damon's voice is as beautiful as it ever has been. The album also reminds me a lot of Children of Men which the lyrics of this album kinda go with. so everytime I hear the album I also think back to the movie, and it makes it a lot better. this album has gotten 0 attention in North America, and that's a damn shame. everyone should seek it out, and I doubt you will be disapointed.
Menomena-Friend and Foe
what a surprise this was. I hadn't heard this band until this album, but now I have to check out all their prior work. I can't really explain this album. it's just so different, and incredible. I have a feeling this album will be getting a lot attention soon. Just check this album out. you'll be very grateful that you did.
Fall Out Boy-Infinity On High
in all honesty, I have never disliked Fall Out Boy. I don't even dislike Pete Wentz. I first heard From Under The Cork Tree shortly after the album came out, and I loved it. just catchy music that you want to sing along to, and doesn't take itself too seriously. but now with this album they have topped themselves tenfold. every track on here is amazing, and just stuff that sticks in your head for days on end. they also expand their musicial boundaries by even doing a Ben Folds-ian piano ballad (Golden), and get Jay-Z to intro their album. there's no doubt this album will be big, and i'm happy that it will be. they deserve it.
Close Call
Talib Kweli/Madlib-Liberation
the best Free album ever made. on December 31st this album appeared as a free download on Madlib's website, and it's a great treat. Talib is on his definite A game proving all the haters who thought he had fallen off wrong. and of course Madlib has some amazing production on the album, especially on "Over The Counter". sadly the album was only available as a free download for the first week of January, cause they are planning to actually release it on CD soon. but oh well, as long as the price is cheap (it's only 9 tracks), then it'll be a very great purchase.
all this and at the end of the month Sean Price's Jesus Price Supastar and the RZA's Afro Samurari soundtrack will be out. all of these albums prove that 2007 has been so far really amazing for music.
