Airplay Audience Milestones
I recently did a Digital Download Record Milestones thread, you can see here.
I made this going through Billboard Issues, these are each the records for Biggest Audience Impressions (U.S.) at their time, and showing the ones they were broke by.
Like for example: "Dreamlover" had it with 89 million impressions, "I Love You Always Forever" broke it with 100+ million , "My Heart Will Go On" broke it with 117 million and so on all the way til the record by Robin Thicke which still remains the record. Billboard began using the Nielsen Soundscan in 1991.
Mariah Carey - Dreamlover: 89 million (September 18, 1993)
Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever: 100+ million (October 12, 1996)
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On: 117 million (said by Billboard w/ no date, the highest date I could find documented was - 115 million March 14, 1998)
TLC - No Scrubs: 140+ million (said by Billboard w/ no date, highest I found documented was 133 million April 24, 1999)
Destiny's Child - Independent Women Part 1: 140.5 million (December 9, 2000)
Alicia Keys - Fallin': 149.1 million (October 6, 2001)
Usher - U Got It Bad: 149.9 million (January 19, 2002)
Ashanti - Foolish: 155.3 million (May 18, 2002)
Nelly - Hot In Herre: 163.1 million (July 27, 2002)
Nelly - Dilemma: 167.7 million (September 7, 2002)
50 Cent - In Da Club: 170.2 million (March 29, 2003)
Usher - Yeah!: 172.3 million (April 17, 2004)
Mario - Let Me Love You: 189.6 million (February 5, 2005)
Mariah Carey - We Belong Together: 212.2 million (July 9, 2005)
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines: 228.9 million (August 24, 2013)
For the ones I put 'said by Billboard w/ no date' that means as in, they wrote something like " "No Scrubs" sets the new Airplay record which was previously held by "My Heart Will Go On" with 117 million". They said the number the previous holder had, but didn't indicate a date and even if you were to look at a song's issues during all the weeks it was #1 on Airplay sometimes they would not mention the songs audience number, it would just say they were #1 on airplay or broke the record.
Did your fave ever have it? Mariah had it twice, "Dreamlover" I discovered had it today.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
