"American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips recently participated in an installment of the GRAMMY Museum's An Evening With series. Before an intimate audience at the Museum's Clive Davis Theater, Phillips discussed auditioning for "Idol" and his musical influences. Phillips also performed a brief set featuring tracks from his 2012 debut album, The World From The Side Of The Moon, including the hits "Home" and "Gone, Gone, Gone," and "Man On The Moon."
"I grew up with a lot of Southern gospel around the house," said Phillips. "And then, by the grace of so many things, I got to hear some Jimi Hendrix."
Born in Leesburg, Ga., Phillips began playing music as a teenager and in 2010 was the first-place winner in a local singing competition, Albany Star. While studying at Albany Technical College, Phillips auditioned for season 11 of "American Idol." He emerged the winner of the reality singing competition series in 2012, edging out Jessica Sanchez. That same year Phillips released his debut single "Home," which he performed on the season finale of "American Idol." The song peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold more than 4 million units to date, making it the most successful coronation song for any "American Idol" winner.
Released in November 2012, The World From The Side Of The Moon has been certified platinum and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, selling more than 500,000 copies in its first six weeks of release, which made it one of the fastest-selling debuts from an "American Idol" winner. The album features the hit singles "Home" and "Gone, Gone, Gone." Phillips is currently on tour throughout the United States as the opening act for GRAMMY winner John Mayer."
