Does anyone else here feel as if cultural appropriation is taken far too seriously? I mean I believe in respect and treating people kindly. I also agree that making a mockery of someone's culture/background is disgusting and shouldn't be allowed. But I don't get how wearing a piece of clothing is 'cultural appropriation', people should be allowed to wear whatever they want as long as it isn't used to be deliberately offensive towards others. I think people take it far too seriously, there shouldn't be specific clothing for specific races that's just ridiculous, HUMAN's should be allowed to wear whatever clothing they like. That's my thoughts anyway, probably going to get insulted for it but whatever. Thoughts?
Cultures can be very sacred and a sensitive topic. When it's used for such "fickle" business like pop culture it may rub off the wrong way for some people.
When singers modify cultures for performances/videos etc it seems like the culture was just used as a cloak to sell a product. It could feel superficial to some, especially when there is no deeper meaning when they use the culture.
I agree, generally I don't see anything wrong with it. Even the "exploitation for profit" thing, I can see why that might offend some but if you aren't being negative towards that culture why does it matter if you make money from something just because you depicted another culture?
99% of British culture and characters depicted on american TV and movies annoys me, because it's always over the top or just completely wrong but I don't think I would get anywhere complaining about it and being overly offended by it.
To be honest, the only place I've heard people talk about it is on here too, but I'm sure it is an issue in various places, just not one's I've been too.
It's not needed and people feel violated by it. If you're not offended by Dark Horse or Hello Kitty and you're Egyptian or Japanese, cool for you. If you're saying you're not offended as a defense and you're white you need to get out. People are allowed to be offended by gross appropriation.
Is it too much to ask for people not to use your culture as a costume and blatantly disrespect it??
People may go overboard sometimes but their hearts are in the right place
It's funny when people use this as an example of cultural appropriation.
The hijab is not a cultural thing, it's a religious thing. There are women of all types of countries and places across the world who are Muslim and wear the hijab.
Also, Rihanna is at a mosque in that picture and it would be disrespectful for her not to wear a hijab.
