Usually they aren't picked to join a fraternity, and if they are, they are treated much different than the rest. it shows that other frat men treated them like novelties, scrutinized them, and made jokes about their homosexual behavior. should colleges fix this problem?

I dated a guy that was in a fraternity at a Christian university. Went to parties, met his friends, everything was fine.

I think a gay fraternity (similar to a Jewish or black fraternity) would be a better solution. Gay men could still join any other fraternity if they wanted, but at least they'd have that safe option.

You can join a progressive fraternity like Delta Lambda Phi. If there's not a chapter on your campus, consider joining a club relating to your major/ideals, (Accounting, Sustainability, Social Justice, there's a lot of stuff ranging from the obvious to the obscure.) that fulfills the social aspect of fraternities.

I don't think so, no. I mean, multi-gendered greek organizations already exist as fraternities as well. The only difference between letting girls joining fraternities and boys joining sororities is just the name.

When it comes to gay men being scrutinized, I don't see the point of them joining a sorority. If a man does not feel welcomed in a fraternity, then they should obviously not join. Why try to align yourself with something that does not accept you? You can still involve yourself with the sororities, but membership isn't a necessary thing. Pretty sure bi-laws do not allow this stuff either.

It's been historically based on gender, and I can see us moving away from the names further down the line, but for now, I think things are fine. We have a transgendered student rushing for a sorority here, and it is exciting to see these opportunities like this exist. The only way that she was able to rush for this sorority is because our university system recognizes her as a female.

No. Sororities are specifically for women. Not just "feminine" people or whatever you're getting at. Gay men are not women and do not go through the same experiences as women. It wouldn't make any sense

I can only speak to my fraternity but we had a bunch of gay members who weren't treated any different and if my memory serves correct, my pledge class alone had 5/19. Again, I can't speak for anyone else's experience, but I always say you have to pledge a fraternity (or equally a sorority) that you can feel safe in, respects you and treats you as an equal. If you can't find one that has values you are looking for, greek life may not be for you.
And it all goes back to the fraternity's nationals who decide who can and can't join. The colleges have no say over a national bylaw.
