Like the unconscious, art ignores the time. We are affected in the same place of our sensibility by the cave paintings of Lascaux, in the frescoes of Giotto or graffiti in the city.
We breathe music as we breathe the air around us, and our thoughts are surrounded by images and artistic references as we live in a digital dark age. I think It's a terrifying idea, and few people seem to realize what is happening. There is currently a big change. People today tend to mix more art forms. Now with Youtube, Ipod, etc.. music is part of people's lives in different ways. With these seven lists I want to take a position and defend the music, art, fashion moments and the cinema that marked my subconscious this year.
This is my 2011 Cultural Memories in Music. Fashion. Cinema & Art.
20 – Nancy Sinatra _ These Boots Are Made For Rockin’ (1966)
Quote:
Musically it's a pretty simple and clean Pop song, It’s was released in February 1966 and hit #1 in the United States and United Kingdom Pop charts. The clip of this song is the proof that Nancy was 10 time sexier than your fave and chile those hell-for-leather boots that she kept on walkin no matter what. Fierce without trying hard !

19 – David Bowie _ Sell Me A Coat (1967)
Quote:
Everything about this song scream classic. The London swinging, the guitar, the Hermione Farthingale harmonies. Just another reason to love this man. Always ahead of his time. His first album is one his best work. Timeless music at his finest.

18 – Cesaria Evora _ Sodade. (1992-1994)
Quote:
I don’t understand portuguese, but let me tell this : there is no other word like "saudade" to tell what saudade means, and there is nobody like evora to sing it that way... I swear i die every ****ing time she say “sodade” in this song. If you think your fave is Diva I will sure tell after listening to this song to take a HUGE SEAT! Deus abençoe Dona Cesaria. .
This first list is one that I simply cannot do, because it seems like I discover songs from the past every couple of days, and trying to do a list for a longer period than a couple of years will mean that the list itself will be larger than my freaking singles list. And that's a top 100!
Anywho, the list itself. These Boots is still a fantastic romp, and "Sell Me A Coat" was just SO ahead of its time. Can't wait for the rest of this top 20.
Movies are still great way to discover music today. Thanks to one of Bertrand Bonello last movie I know who Vincent Lee Moses was. He is the tip of the iceberg of neglected soul artists. Time And Place (1971) is only album and it’s a great great record. When you listen to this song or another one call “Bad Girl” you can feel the Hendrix influenced. A real soul music treasure.

16 – Les Chansons D’Amour _ La Bastille (2007)
Quote:
I cannot put words on this masterpiece of movie, let alone the soundtrack where this song is from. I so wish you all could understand even lil bit french to realize how much this song is a genius musical poetry. But I know one thing, the music has no language, it transcends everything. Just close your eyes and let the rain falls without a care in your imagination. You will feel the power of La Bastille.

IKR ? It's so hard to choose between all these great songs. But i have a playlist of past songs i discover. I just choose behind the most played.
I mean that I like the use of video game art and such in the 2011 banner.

Makes sense. If I used that method, I might actually be able to get my list down to a top 50.
Hell, the last set has a couple of songs I don't even immediately recognize, which is ALWAYS a good thing, because it inspires me to check out more music.
Beautiful song. I've never heard this before this year. Just one piano and Elton doing all the vocal harmonies. I still dont understand how they manage to this great tune a b-side to his 1978 hit, Part-Time Love.

14- Celine Dion _ Falling Into You (1996)
Quote:
I dont really care for Celine Dion music. I know most her songs because she use to be overplayed at her peak, but i think it's really bizarre i never listen to Falling Into You before condidering it's one of the best selling album ever ? Anyway the flawless production and the rumba influence make this an exception. I Love It !

13- Applause _ The Lighthouse (2009)
Quote:
Applause is one of my fave band. Their music is just incredible. You never know how to describe it. I mean listen to this song is it jazz ? Pop ? New wave ? It's just great music. I(ve listen to this song too many times and i still have the same effect of being hypnotize by Nicolas Ly voice. The accapela version is even better. Just enjoy !
Even if I think most people on Atrl music is limited and predictable, there are some exceptions like this The Nina Simone Appreciation Thread... I can now think ****y On Venus because he make me discover this song and the whole album Baltimore. I didn’t know the woman music well before I made that thread. Since, I listen to Baltimore every morning when I’m brushing my teeth. I cant believe this was released 3 decade ago. It sound so fresh and contemporary. Great relaxing vibe.

11- Agnes Obel _ Riverside (2010)
Quote:
If you havent listen to Agnes Obel first album Philharmonics', you should. I saw her live two months ago and she’s just PERFECT! When she seat on her piano she could put Alicia Keys and Gaga to shame. She just remind you that music is an universal way to communicate your feelings, it doesn't matter where you come from and this song just make me GOOSEBUMPS !

10- John Cale _ Half Past France (1973)
Quote:
This song deserves a better place than #10 because John Cale one of the greatest songwriter Ever lived and his album Paris 1919 is must have on your music collection if you’re a true Rock’N’Roll fan. Like David Bowie or Nina Simone, his album Paris 1919 is so ahead of time. This song's just so poetic in a delicate sort of way, it feels like it could fall apart at any moment and they captured it just in time. Great piece of music !
I discovered this song when the late Nate Dogg died later this year. I listened to it like three times on youtube before then I downloaded it. I’m still convince Snoop Dogg is The best rapper of his generation. His swag just give you chills. This was back when Gangsta **** ruled the world, now ever rapper needs ****in auto tune, to collab with some indie rockers or to wear Givenchy to be co-sign. I mean B*tch PLEASE !

08- Serge Gainsbourg _ Bonnie and Clyde (English Version). (1968)
Quote:
I dont think I'd ever heard such a stylish song like this... If you saw Rush Hour 3, you probably heard the french version with Brigitte Bardot which is better. There's also another with his son Lulu Gainsbourg and Scarlett Johanson which sucks hard. But this english version is base on excerpts from verses 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 14 and 16 of a poem entitled "The Trail's End" written by Bonnie Parker in 1934. Sounds tough and evil. Simply Brilliant !
