Welcome to ATRL’s
50 Greatest R&B Albums of All Time!
Some of you may remember my
30 Greatest R&B Albums of the Last 30 Years countdown from Autumn of 2012. To prevent more mass outrage and mess, this year’s R&B countdown will work
much differently.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
We will
not be using the same 100-point voting system we did last year. Each participant will submit their ballots to me in a private message. The ballot will comprise a
list of the participant’s favorite R&B albums of all time (Artist –
Album – “Favorite Song”).
- A minimum of 10 albums must be listed, but no more than 20. Yes, you may send me 11 or 19 albums if you want.
- No artist may appear more than 3 times in your ballot.
- Be sure to include your favorite song next to each album on your list. You may include up to three of your favorite songs from each album.
- You are free to change your ballot at anytime!
- Write me at least two sentences about why your #1 album is in your opinion the best R&B album ever. You may write more than two sentences, but no more than a paragraph. You may write about other albums on your list if you feel that passionately about them. But all I am asking for is two sentences about your #1 favorite; Again, more than two sentences (up to a paragraph) about your favorite album or any other album on your list is entirely optional.
Of course, I’m ENCOURAGING you to go above and beyond and write paragraphs, but I am NOT MANDATING it.

Beyoncé’s fourth album features her best vocal performances and instrumentals to date. It was a refreshing and surprising return to traditional R&B in a popular music climate that focused mainly on electronic dance music. Songs like “Countdown” and “End of Time” are brilliant Pop masterpieces and prove Beyoncé’s skill as a musician and as a vocalist.

Is that so hard?
HOW THIS WILL WORK
You will not have to decide how many points to award to each album you vote for; the amount of points an album you vote for will receive is pre-determined based on number ranking. It will work in intervals of 5 points: The #1 album on your list will receive 100 points. The #2 album on your list will receive 95 points. The #3 album on your list will receive 90 points, and so on. It does not matter if you don’t submit 20 albums; this will still apply.
GENERAL RULES & QUALIFICATIONS
- Genre – This is an R&B countdown. We will retain the previous countdown’s definition of an R&B album; at least half of the tracks on the album are R&B. The artist’s primary genre is irrelevant. For example, I Am… Sasha Fierce, Bad, Purple Rain and The Bodyguard are NOT R&B albums. However, Bedtime Stories (arguably) IS. If you cannot decide upon the genre on the album, bring the question up in the thread.
Any and all ancestors and/or subgenres of R&B will be considered R&B. Neo-Soul, New Jack Swing, Funk, Soul, Blues, Disco, etc., are all fine.
- Language – Stick to English-language albums only. Sorry Nait!
- Release Date – DOES NOT MATTER. You can vote for something from 1954 if you want!
- Voter Integrity – Make all decisions based on quality and
almost nothing else. If there is an important artist or album in the running that needs a little extra boost, I will tell you in the thread. Don’t vote for an album just because your favorite artist released it or because of its commercial success. Do YOU believe it is one of the greatest R&B albums ever made?
DEADLINE + OTHER DETAILS
You will have until July 17th, 2013 to submit your ballots to me through private message. There will be no extensions whatsoever.
Unless you’re one of my friends and I have to beg you to participate.
