Kylie honoured as UK's queen of singles!
The Official Charts Company has formally recognised Kylie Minogue as one of the all-time singles queens – marking both her own glittering 25th anniversary in music, K25, and the 60th anniversary of the Official Singles Chart.
Alan Carr did the honours on behalf of the Official Charts Company, exclusively presenting the pop superstar with seven Official Number 1 Awards to mark her seven Official UK Number 1 singles, at the filming of her appearance on tonight’s (Friday, June 1) Chatty Man. The special awards are each bespoke printed with single title and date that the track went to Number 1 – a veritable feast to behold for lifelong Kylie fans!
Kylie is the first female chart legend to be presented with a full set of her Official Number 1 Awards.
I Should Be So Statty...
Kylie’s status as a singles legend is underlined by the extraordinary stats surrounding her career:
• Kylie is the 12th biggest selling singles artist of all time in the UK
• She has 10.1m UK singles sales to her name
• Can’t Get You Out Of My Head is the biggest selling track of her career, selling 1.15 million copies in the UK, and an eye-popping 300,000 copies in its first week on sale back in 2001
• Can’t Get You Out Of My Head also features in the UK’s Official Top 100 biggest selling singles of all time at #72
Martin Talbot, Managing Director of the Official Charts Company says: “We are delighted to recognise Kylie’s amazing achievements over the past 25 years – her seven Number 1 singles puts her amongst the all-time great singles artists of the past 60 years, let alone the last 25. Having sold 10.1m singles in the UK through her career, she is the 12th biggest singles artist of all time. She may have been born in Australia, but she is most definitely a British national treasure!”
The awards
From Kylie’s first Number 1 here in the UK - I Should Be So Lucky back in February 1988, Especially For You (Pete Waterman’s PWL record label’s biggest selling single ever), Hand On Your Heart (which knocked Bangles’ Eternal Flame off its 4 week chart-topping run), Tears On My Pillow, the famed ‘comeback’ single Spinning Around (featuring THOSE hot pants), the iconic Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (Number 1 for 4 consecutive weeks, sold over 300k copies in its first week on sale (), going on to sell well over 1 million copies in the UK), through to 2003’s Slow.
Fast-forward to 2012 and Kylie is still causing a stir among her army of fans. The Twittersphere was set alight last Friday as fans were urged to tweet the words #KylieTimebomb in order to unlock a surprise new single from the Aussie superstar. Her new video for Timebomb sees the pop queen once again rocking a pair of hot pants as she struts through the streets of Central London, including Soho’s famous Old Compton Street.
Kylie releases The Best Of Kylie Minogue on Monday (June 4) and is available to pre-order now.
Kylie’s Official Number 1 singles as recognised by the Official Charts Company.
• I Should Be So Lucky (February 1988)
• Especially For You (1989)
• Hand On Your Heart (1989)
• Tears On My Pillow (1990)

I don't wanna sound rude, but Rihanna has way more thing to me honoured
• Kylie is the 12th biggest selling singles artist of all time in the UK - IDK about Rihanna
• She has 10.1m UK singles sales to her name - Rihanna has +13.6 m
• Can’t Get You Out Of My Head is the biggest selling track of her career, selling 1.15 million copies in the UK, and an eye-popping 300,000 copies in its first week on sale back in 2001 - Rihanna has 3, 1 million seller
• Can’t Get You Out Of My Head also features in the UK’s Official Top 100 biggest selling singles of all time at #72 - So where is WFL?

Yep. But they said Kylie is one of the queens. And this "award" is more about longevity, I think. However, Kylie has 33 top ten singles, Rihanna doesn't, Kylie has 46 top 40 hits and 11 platinum albums and I'm not sure Rihanna will ever achive that.

Rihanna hasn't been doing this for 25 years. You need to be respectful.

Impressive. I think the title's a bit misleading though as I'm pretty sure Madonna and Rihanna have sold more singles in the UK than Kylie.

In fact, Kylie has 2 singles with more than 1 million sales. And I think it used to be harder to do that before.

I'm a Rihanna stan but let's be honest, Kylie's done this at an age where singles weren't nearly as massive as the current climate where Rihanna is dominating.

It's not only about who sold more, though. This is clearly an opportunity for her considering she's about to celebrate with K25. I'm sure at some point they'll recognize Madonna with these new awards.

I would, quite frankly, be VERY surprised if she didn't. Rihanna actually has 34 top 40 hits. She actually has an incredibly high rate of getting top 40. Quite literally, the only singles in her career that didn't go top 40 there are the ones that never got officially released in the UK (Break It Off, Hard, Rockstar 101, Raining Men, Man Down, and Birthday Cake). Her support in the UK is phenomenal.

What about the 33 top 10 singles? Why are we talking about Rihanna. Let's not go off-topic and avoid warning points, please.
