I say Applause because of the backlash Gaga was receiving at the time. Rih was coming off of a smash era and a recent smash hit, with a song that featured two HUGE artists and it barely managed to score more video views and mediatraffic points than Applause.

Gaga was going against Roar which was released during the same time + 7x platinum smash hits Blurrend Lines and Get Lucky how many weeks did Riri spent on #1 during the lil no competition time?

That's not true. FFS has outsold Applause everywhere except for US and Japan.
