Mexico the fifth economy by 2040-2050
President Calderón began by quoting a Goldman Sachs analysis published by The Economist, stating that Mexico will be the world’s fifth largest economy by 2040. He then listed some of Mexico’s advantages, such as government’s commitment to the rule of law, its low country risk and the Stock Exchange's recent record performance, adding that Mexico is the world's fourth largest petroleum producer, has the fifth largest biodiversity, a broad network of trade agreements giving it access to over a thousand million people worldwide and a young population.
He then outlined the five points in the government’s agenda for enabling Mexico to take advantage of all possible opportunities. The first is to ensure law enforcement and provide a safe environment for both the general public and investors. The second is to achieve a competitive economy that will create employment. The third is to invest in health and education, the fourth involves a definite commitment to sustainable development in Mexico while the fifth involves achieving an effective democracy. The president reiterated his desire to make Mexico one of the world's best investment destinations, saying, “I am convinced that what we need to be able to create and promote employment in Mexico is investment, both national and foreign and public and private."
This was then followed by a brief question and answer session. Asked about the continuity of investment programs in the area of public-private partnerships and other types of long-term concessions, President Calderón expressed confidence in the country's current capacity for long-term planning, and gave an example of a successful public-private partnership involving the construction of a hospital in Guanajuato. Questioned by a representative of the Packard group about the possibility of investing in infrastructure, President Calderón explained that Mexican legislation permitted private investment in public institutions, and highway and airport construction.
