How is it "try-hard"? Is it try-hard to show your actual skills instead of using cheap gimmicks and outrageous costumes to cover up for mediocrity and lack of talent?
You have to think about what it was like a few years ago (2007-2011), it was the opposite, people were making songs to sound as loud as possible, and it was absolutely tragic. It's much better now, all the big hits sound different due to the minimalism.
