We've noticed an increase in DMCA complaints about full news articles on ATRL. Copying more than 50% of the article and/or not giving proper credit is a violation of copyright law and our policy. We have updated our rules and policy pages to make this clear and added a new warning type called “Infringement”.
Although the new warning will be in effect immediately, our moderators will first issue reminders to thread authors that don’t currently follow the set limits:
- Articles must be no more than 50% of the original material
- You must give proper credit by linking to the source of the article
This is a matter of copyright infringement, not us trying to take away your fun. Legally, it's same as file sharing.
In the future, please just post a relevant excerpt and then link to the website with the rest of the article. That should be enough to get discussion started.
Of course. More chances for WPs. DMCA can have a seat.
But anyway, I understand about how we have to source are article, and all, because that's something we all have to do, but why not more than 50% as long as it's sourced? What if the entire article is interesting and needs to be quoted in full
Makes sense. Some articles are copyrighted, just like songs and movies are. Even though these things are completely different, any kind of copyright violation is against the law.

Any form of original creative expression is copyrighted. Facts themselves are not protected, but how they're conveyed can be, so you have to be careful, even with news articles.
