Billboard 200 Albums (May 30-June 6, 2012)

The new-and-improved John Mayer appears to agree with his fans, since the formerly mouthy guitar-slinger's latest, Born And Raised
, will debut at the top of the Billboard 200 next week. Mayer's fifth solo disc will become his third to come in at the top of the charts thanks to sales of 219,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
Well behind him was Adele, whose 21 continues to astonish, moving nearly 56,000 copies in its 66th week on the charts. In fact, since its February 2011 release, 21 has only fallen out of the top 5 one time on its way to more than 9.2 million in sales.
The top 10 also saw the debut of the latest solo effort from guitar hero Slash, Apocalyptic Love (#4, 38,000), Christian rockers MercyMe, Hurt & the Healer (#7, 33,000) and singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles, Once Upon Another Time (#8, 31,000). The rest of the top 10: Carrie Underwood, Blown Away (#3, 45,000), One Direction, Up All Night (#5, 37,000), Lionel Richie, Tuskegee (#6, 33,000), NOW 42 (#9, 31,000) and Norah Jones, Little Broken Hearts (#10, 28,00).
It was a big tumble for former "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert, whose second major-label album, Trespassing, slipped 71 percent in its second week and 10 spots to #11 on sales of 22,000, while "Idol" finalist Haley Reinhart's debut, Listen Up! debuted at #16 (20,000). Both had better weeks than Lambert's former rival, "Idol" champ Kris Allen, who showed up at #25 with his second album, Thank You Camellia (16,000).
Elsewhere, Gotye pal Kimbra broke into the charts at #13 with Vows (22,000) and joke rock duo Tenacious D had one of the week's biggest drops, with Rize of the Fenix sinking 24 spots from its debut to #28 (14,000). In the wake of Robin Gibb's death
fans were motivated to check out Ultimate Bee Gees, which had a 291 percent sales increase to enter the charts at #47 on sales of just under 9,000. Another Brothers Gibb compilation, Number Ones, charted at #68 (7,000).

Billboard 200 Albums (May 31-June 6, 2012)

John Mayer's "Born and Raised" album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 219,000 copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
It's the singer/songwriter's third No. 1 set, following 2009's "Battle Studies" and 2003's "Heavier Things." "Battle Studies" bowed with 289,000 in its first week, while "Heavier Things" launched with 317,000. He released a solo studio album between those sets, 2006's "Continuum," which entered at No. 2 off a 300,000 start.
'Born and Raised': Track-By-Track Review
As Mayer has a throat condition called granuloma, he's unable to sing and was prevented from doing a lot of traditional promotional activities to support the new album. However, during release week, he visited "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on May 22, sitting in with house band the Roots and chatting with Fallon. He also played guitar with the band on "Late Show With David Letterman" (May 17) and was interviewed on NPR's "All Things Considered" (May 18).
Mayer wrote to his fans on his official Tumblr <http://jhnmyr.tumblr.com/post/237506...motion-for> (May 25) about how the album was projected to debut at No. 1 <http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/indus...2352.story> . He said it was "incredible on all your parts because there has been very little I've been able to do to promote it <http://jhnmyr.tumblr.com/post/237506...motion-for> ."
Meanwhile, last week's No. 1 album, Adam Lambert's "Trespassing," falls straight out of the top 10. It drops from No. 1 to No. 12 with 22,000 (down 71%). It's the first No. 1-debuting title to fall out of the top 10 in its second week since the Dec. 3, 2011, chart, when Mac Miller's "Blue Slide Park" collapsed 1-24.
Back up the chart at Nos. 2 and 3, Adele's "21" and Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" hold their positions. They sell 56,000 (down 11%) and 45,000 (down 17%), respectively.
Slash's new "Apocalyptic Love" (featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators) debuts at No. 4 with 28,000. Slash's last studio album, his self-titled 2010 release, debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 60,000 sold in its first week. That effort was a star-studded affair, with guests ranging from Fergie to Chris Cornell providing vocals. On "Apocalyptic Love," Kennedy -- who also appeared on "Slash" -- sings on all of the tracks.
One Direction's "Up All Night" jumps five spots to No. 5 (37,000; up 8%) while Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee" rises three to No. 6 (33,000; down 15%).
MercyMe bows at No. 7 with "The Hurt & the Healer," shifting nearly 33,000 copies. It's the band's second top 10 album and follows 2010's "The Generous Mr. Lovewell," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with an 88,000 launch.
Sara Bareilles' five-song EP "Once Upon Another Time" starts at No. 8 with 31,000, giving the singer her third top 10 effort. She hit the top 10 previously with "Kaleidoscope Heart" (No. 1 in 2010) and "Little Voice" (No. 7 in 2008).
The "Now 42" compilation falls three rungs to No. 9 with nearly 31,000 (down 27%) and Norah Jones' "Little Broken Hearts" tumbles five to No. 10 with 28,000 (down 38%).
Just outside the top 10, "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips' "Journey to the Finale" album debuts at No. 11 with 24,000. The set is exclusively sold via the iTunes Store.
Phillips isn't the only "Idol" making waves on the Billboard 200 chart this week though, as 2011 contestant Haley Reinhart's debut album "Listen Up!" starts at No. 17 with 20,000. At No. 21, the "American Idol Season 11 - Top 2 Season Finale" EP bows with 18,000. Further down the list, 2009 winner Kris Allen sees his sophomore set, "Thank You Camellia," debut at No. 27 with 16,000. This year's runner-up, Jessica Sanchez, enters at No. 126 with her own "Journey to the Finale" album at No. 126 with 4,000.
News about the new Digital Songs chart, and where Phillips' "Home" will debut, is due later today (May 30).
Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending May 27) totaled 5.24 million units, up 3% compared to the sum last week (5.09 million) and down 22% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (6.67 million). Year to date album sales stand at 122.63 million, down 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (125.86 million).
Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" held at No. 1 for a second week, selling 174,000 (down 84%). Death Cab for Cutie's "Codes and Keys" was the highest debut, starting at No. 3 with 102,000.

I'm curious to know how much Adele will sell when RHI totally dies.

Don't forget she will have the promo from the NBC special on Sunday. So she will have a bit of a boost from that.
I am hoping for 3 more weeks in the top 3 and 6 more weeks in the top 5 of the BB200, at least.
Wks in top 3
63 - Thriller
60 - 21
Wks in top 5
71 - Thriller
66 - Born In The USA
65 - 21
With big new releases at the end of June/early July it will be a close call.

Nice Phillip, they were so quick to write him off as a flop when this is the best iTunes-exclusive compilation debut to date

Next week’s HITS Album sales chart should be a case of Born again.
That’s because Columbia Records singer/songwriter/guitar-slinger and shaggy-haired heartthrob John Mayer looks likely to nab the top spot for a second straight appearance, with Born and Raised slated to sell around 50-60% less than the 220k he grabbed to make him #1.
The results are based on one-day sales figures from those retailers who haven’t turned their stores into Mitt Romney campaign headquarters.
As far as debuts go, Sire Russian alternative songstress Regina Spektor’s sixth studio album, What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, is slated for the highest finish, with a projected total of between 30-35k. Her previous album, Far, bowed with 50k in June ’09.
Vagrant SoCal neo-hippies Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, which goes through INgrooves Fontana, return with Here, the follow-up to their left-field 2009 success, Up from Below, slated for between 27-30k.
XL Icelandic avant-rockers Sigur Ros’ Valtari, their sixth album, is headed for between 20-23k.
RCA Atlanta rap trio Travis Porter is eyeing 12-15k for their debut album, From Day 1.
June begins a roll-out of major releases, including Usher (6/12), Justin Bieber and Kenny Chesney (6/19), as well as Linkin Park and Maroon 5 (6/26), with Chris Brown (7/3) and Zac Brown Band (7/10) both slated for July.
This past week, the industry went up against last year’s debut of Lady Gaga's Born This Way, which opened with 1.1m for the period ending May 29, which accounts for the downward trend.
