60. Alexandria – You Ain't Gotta Lie

I remember this coming out late late 2015 but I’m obviously including it for 2016. Alexandria and Awful label-mate Ethereal perfect their longtime partnership with this song–she gains confidence with her vocal styling to equal Ethereal’s outer space production, and I feel like I’m being cajoled into apologizing when listening. Here’s to more brilliance from the duo!

59. French Montana & Kodak Black – Lockjaw

Even though he’s a middling rapper, it’s kinda great how French Montana keeps delivering amazing hits each year, but to be honest, it’s mostly down to the guest appearances and Lockjaw with Kodak is no exception. He serves as the force of the song but it’s not a takeover entirely–the song is much better with them both going back-and-forth and I love French’s part during the hook. “Biiiteee down...bite down!” It’s catchy as hell.

58. Waterhouse – Empty Gallery

It sees a blend of muted strings, percussion pads and a voice masked with reverb to make for a strangely gorgeous atmosphere. And when the voice becomes more focused on lyrics, it reminds me of another somber atmospheric song from the year ("Wolves" by Kanye West) but Empty Gallery resonated more for me. It was the perfect song for Sunday nights in 2016.

57. Virginia – Bally Linny

With her 2016 album “Fierce For the Night”, Virginia sought out to travel through some of her favourite genres of dance music and time periods, and she did so by incorporating boogie, deep house, acid, Detroit techno, among other styles, but Bally Linny with it’s synth-laden house influence stood out as the mighty killer. The chorus makes for a huge dancefloor anthem.

56. Dave & AJ Tracey – Thiago Silva

Dave & AJ Tracey are two of grime’s fastest rising prospects so it was a thrill to hear them exchanging bars over a rework of one of grime’s best instrumentals ever (“Pied Piper” by Prince Rapid). They both came with massive verses packed with punchlines and developed a nice flow to seamlessly bounce off each other throughout. AJ’s final verse directly transitioning into Dave’s and him murdering it is one of my favourite moments in music this year.
