Gwyneth Paltrow has given a lot of thought to lube lately.
The 43-year-old (and her Goop team) first started wondering about it after watching an episode of Netflix’s Grace and Frankie when Frankie, played by Lily Tomlin, makes her own lube from a recipe using yams.
'We’d never considered what went into lube, and that it’s actually super toxic (the most popular options contain parabens, for one), and that we are in theory putting it into the most vulnerable and permeable part of our bodies,' she wrote on her website.

So what's a lube-loving girl or guy to do? Gwynnie's got solutions. Her go-to MD offers this rule of thumb: 'If it is safe to eat, it is generally safe to apply.'
Organic coconut oil, olive oil, aloe vera gel, or almond oil are all healthy substitutes that can add lubrication with fewer health risks. The only catch is that they can't be used with condoms, since they can make the latex less effective.
