Not being destroyed by world wars, without ethnic or military conflicts, with considearble natural resources and population and fairly developed economy, why hasn't South America became a global force?

Plus, they haven't even reached a post-industrial status they still are developing or un-developed.

-The colonists in the US and Canada came to live A.K.A Uk, whereas the conquistadors A.K.A Spain came looking for resources to send back.
-Incredibly Bad Governments
-Drugs
-First World Imperialism
-Poor leadership - Many of the nations in Latin America have chosen populist leaders, but not competent ones. These leaders have driven away business investment by nationalizing companies, failing to control corruption and cronyism, failing to address social problems within the nations and failing to work on their relationship with the most powerful nation in the Americas, the United States.
-Country development is very dependant on the Climate Zones. (Compare the earth tropical equatorial zones & the cold Northern-South ones)


It’s an ironic truth that resource-rich countries are some of the economically poorest on earth, while on average resource-poor countries have been more successful. This is called the resource trap.

They are not too interested. Think about it, they could form some kind of Latin American Union like the European Union (no, MERCOSUL does not count).

That, and also corruption is rampant and actually there are lots of inequalities. Bolivia and the northern part of Central America are really poor. Uruguay and Chile are middle class countries.

Brazil always, always, always manages to screw up in the final steps of entry into being a world contender; rampant inflation issues, crashes, government set backs, etc. always get in the way. That aside, I am comfortable saying Brazil will be a large market by the end of our lives.

Chile is pretty solid in terms of stability, but it's weird shape and diverse culture creates issue.

But, you can blame most of it not on the success of Brazil / Chile / Argentina maybe, but rather how poor and corrupt the smaller countries are. Which, this isn't entirely their fault, as the current global powers use these countries for resources, and the governments aren't doing things in the best interest of their people, but rather the companies and their own pockets.

It all boils down to COLONIALISM.

The way our countries were depleted of their natural resources and our societies shaped with the mixed cultures of African slaves, aboriginal natives and European invadors created an amalgalm that is very heterogeneous in a society that is still very young in its independence and was left to fend for itself by corrupt and power hungry leaders after the invadors from Spain, Portugal and other countries took what they wanted and left.
