Entertainment Weekly:
Lady Gaga slayed her tribute to 'The Sound of Music'.
With gray hair, a flowing dress, and a British accent, Lady Gaga sang a medley of songs from The Sound of Music in honor of the film’s 50th anniversary.
Scarlett Johansson introduced Gaga, noting “there was no solution to Maria but to love her.” After entering a stage adorned with trees, Gaga began by belting “The Sound of Music,” and then segued, with some skirt swishing, into “My Favorite Things.” The medley concluded with “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”

Washington Post:
Lady Gaga sang a “Sound of Music” medley for no real reason other than to single-handedly rescue Oscar night from its post-11 o’clock doldrums, receiving a standing ovation and the approval of none other than Julie Andrews herself. That was one of those award-show moments where your first response is a groan and a mournful look at how long the show is running (the 50th anniversary of “Sound of Music?” Big whoop). But your last response is a plain and simple wow. It’s nice to know the Oscars can still do that.

Forbes:
The pop star wasn’t even nominated for a prize, but she stole the show none the less. Her tribute to The Sound Of Music featured several of the 50 year old film’s most-loved tracks, and had audience members roaring in approval by the end. The cherry on top was Julie Andrews emerging from backstage to hug and congratulate Gaga, giving her the ultimate seal of approval.

Consequence of Sound:
Lady Gaga just gave the best performance of her career at the Oscars. A spectacular tribute to the Sound of Music. Add in the presence of Hollywood’s most elite, including Maria herself, Dame Julie Andrews, and Lady Gaga’s performance at tonight’s Academy Awards was arguably the most important gig of her career.

Time Magazine:
Lady Gaga performed an incendiary medley from The Sound of Music — seemed like a strange idea, but totally worked — ending with a salute from Julie Andrews, who pronounced “Lady Gaga” as though it were a royal title.

Lady Gaga’s Performance at the Oscars Could Redefine Her Career
At an Oscars ceremony whose high points were almost entirely musical, Lady Gaga stole the show. The “Bad Romance” singer ditched her usual elaborate theatrics for a pared-down, beautiful 50th anniversary tribute to The Sound of Music, for which she hit Julie Andrews’s high notes; the Oscar-winning actress thanked Gaga by name, proving that the establishment has accepted a pop star who was once the oddest girl in any room. What was shocking about it all was how un-shocking it was.
After all, this isn’t just any pop star we’re talking about. Lady Gaga practically invented the current era of pop music as spectacle, one that’s become an escalating arms race of self-conscious oddity. Katy Perry’s palling around with Left Shark and Miley Cyrus’s every aesthetic choice both owe something to Lady Gaga.

IMDB:
Lady Gaga channeling Julie Andrews for a medley honoring The Sound of Music was absolutely moving, but what capped off the emotions of the moment was seeing Andrews take the stage to hug her, then to thank her tearfully at the microphone for the lovely tribute. "It warmed my heart. It really did."

Wall Street Journal:
One thing a lot of people forget is that underneath all of her meat dresses, space-age gowns and Tony Bennett duets, Lady Gaga is a classically trained musician. So when she belted out an impeccably angelic medley of “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” the proper reaction should have been, “Well, yeah, what did you expect? A synth version of ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’?” Carrie Underwood, you just got served.

Wearing an elaborate gown and long silver-blond hair, the pop star cranked her vocal power — and her mega-watt smile — to full, beautiful blast as she sang bits of "Edelweiss," "My Favorite Things" and, of course, "Climb Ev'ry Mountain."

Billboard:
Her ARTPOP era firmly in the rearview mirror, Gaga's Oscars showcase may have been a turning point in her career.
Asked to perform a medley of songs from The Sound of Music in honor of the 50th anniversary of the film's release, Gaga took what could have been a thankless task during the final hour of an endless telecast, and turned the performance into the music moment everyone was talking about on Monday morning.
The performance earned a standing ovation and a hug from Julie Andrews; more importantly, it felt like the kind of showcase that becomes a career cornerstone.

Lady Gaga performs impressive Sound of Music tribute at the Oscars
The Artpop singer paid homage to the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic with a medley of the show’s biggest numbers – and the audience loved it

NY Daily News:
Just nine days before its golden anniversary, Gaga scaled Richard Rodgers’ Alpine melodies with warmth and grace. She ably imitated Andrews’ sonorous, original readings of songs like the title track, “Edelweiss” and “My Favorite Things.” She even belted to the sky mother superior’s operatic finale, “Climb Every Mountain.”
Gaga, dressed in an elegant white and silver gown, seemed to relish performing songs associated with an era well before her birth.
This poised performance went a ways towards establishing Gaga as a star for any age - not just one tied to the fickle nature of the charts of the hour.

BBC:
The ecstasy, as it turned out, was left to Lady Gaga. The decision to have her do a tribute to The Sound of Music, 50 years after it swept the Oscars, sounded on the face of it like the height of counterintuitive nuttiness, but instead it worked like magic. And not just because Gaga proved, amazingly, that she has the vocal chops to evoke the pearly purity of Julie Andrews. Her performance was a rebuke to the very premise of the indie Oscars. For here was Gaga, the boldest and most controversial pop singer since Madonna, engaged in a sincere embrace of the ultimate wholesome family movie. For a moment, in the triumphant gorgeousness of her singing, the edgy and the mainstream became one; vulgarity and taste became one. We can only hope that the Oscars of the future live up to the Lady Gaga-meets-Julie Andrews dream.

We already knew Gaga could sing, as she had been ever-increasingly eager to impress on us. We just didn’t know she could sing… certain notes. Having Gaga channel Julie Andrews was a stunt, to be sure, but a smart stunt that paid off not just as a watercooler moment but as a musical one.
