It always has. I mean, decades of evidence back this up. Not that I'm saying it's guaranteed to work in every case, but on average it's true more often than not. And it's a fact that a lot of artists (even the talented ones who do have a sexy image) simply wouldn't be where they are without banking on sex appeal on some level. It's one shtick that never gets old, and likely never will.
I personally don't mind it just as long as they don't overdo it, because like any gimmick it can overshadow the music if you're not careful about how you sell that aspect of yourself. But even when that happens, it doesn't really seem to hurt an artist's commercial viability. It does however, cause people to question their credibility as an artist.
