Okay, this is the first time I'm participating !
It seemed nice to read last year so I thought why not ?
Still, I'm warning you it's probably going to be a little messy and low budget but I'll do my best to be as entertaining as I can with the comments.
So what we're going to have is different kinds of top 10. I won't be doing any TV shows since I didn't discover any new shows this year except Ringer.
We'll have:
The best 2011's singles, of course
come back later
The best unknown 2011's tracks
come back later
The top 10 worst songs of 2011
come back later
The top 10 songs that are not from 2011 but that i listened to the most this year .
come back later
And maybe more if I get inspired !
Stay tuned
PS/ I'll be doing my rankings 5 by 5 songs, I think.
I won't be updating everyday but you'll still have some nice stuff to read I hope.
PS2/ I changed my mind ! i'll be doing 3 songs each time I'll update from now on.
The excellent first single from Gossip's lead singer is a well crafted throwback to 90s Eurodance music.
She even added a touch of class and refinement thanks to her witty lyrics and wonderful vocals.
Unfortunately, the song didn't really go anywhere... It's too bad because I'm sure there is a market for dance divas with powerhouse vocals and it's one of the few times where the mix really worked.
Memorable lyrics : " The world is full of good intentions
Paradise is hard to find
Say they love you but fail to mention
Who they were with again last night "
9/ Camélia Jordana -Moi, c'est
Quote:
This french singer comes from the 2009's season of the French version of American Idol (yes, I'm French by the way).
She has a really polarizing voice and many people say she can't sing for sh*t.
It doesn't matter most of the time IMO as long as your tone and your interpretation are convincing, well art can be created.
When she released her first album in 2010, I wasn't really convinced. Her first single wasn't bad , just average at best.
Then, she released "Moi, c'est" as a third single and it changed everything.
"Moi, c'est" is an amazing minimalist French pop song with great lyrics telling the story of someone who is tired of being always ignored by her lover, 2011 wasn't an interesting year for French music and Camélia's song was a refreshing surprise.
Memorable lyrics: " Parle moi tout à coup
Même un petit peu beaucoup
Et pourquoi c'est toujours mon tour " =
" All of a sudden speak to me
Even if there's too much too say
And why am I always the one who does the first step "
8/ Example - Changed The Way You Kissed Me
Quote:
My favourite Example song will always be "Won't Go Quietly" but this one gives her a good run for her money!
I love how the singer sings the first lines of the song in such an intense manner and when you expect for it to explode like most songs would, it doesn't ! It just run its course like a living entity. And you're the one following the song and not the other way around.
Memorable lyrics: " I’ve never been afraid of the highest heights,
or afraid of flying
I’ve never been afraid of the wildest fights,
not afraid of dying "
7/ Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)
Quote:
This poor song got so much undeserved hate. It's catchy, anthemic, 80s influenced just like the music video and self-deprecating.
Besides, the production is very simplistic. It's basically the same loop over and over but it still works and you even wish the song was longer. Also the use of the saxophone is so cute !
Another European masterpiece massacred by an American "rapper" ! I think I need to pay a visit to T-Pain and Flo Rida because it went on for too long ! LMAO Even GiGi D'Agostino was ripped off !
But enough with, that let's talk about this song. What we have here is a clean club song, perfectly predictable yet very effective.
The only risk taken here is the inclusion of some old Etta James vocals and it sounds like she was always made for trance music !!!
Get it Etta !
Memorable lyrics: " Oh, sometimes
I get a good feeling, yeah
And a feeling that I never, never, never, never had before, no no "
5/ Britney Spears – I Wanna Go
Quote:
Perfect track when you want to escape this cruel world.
The ABBA inflenced parts, the whistles and Britney's enthusiastic interpretation turned this song into the ultimate feel good athem of the summer.
It's also not as generic as it seems ( if you have a little bit of musical knowledge) yet deliciously commercial.
VIVA BRITNEY SPEARS.
Memorable lyric:"Lately People Got Me All Tied Up
There’s A Countdown Waiting For Me To Erupt
Time To Blow Out"
4/ Rihanna- Mandown
Quote:
Rihanna lets her inner Rastafarian shines through and impress me for the first time of her career. What makes shis song so special ? The carribean mood, the reggae and Rihanna ! The way she plays with the words, her accent, her total control of the beat, it's organic, beautiful and raw. And clearly the best thing she has ever made.
Now if only, she could make entire albums like this instead of fillerific efforts, I would really appreciate it!
Memorable lyric: "It's a 22
I Call her peggy sue
When she fits right down in my shoes
What do you expect me to do
If you're playing me for a fool
I will lose my cool
And reach for my fire arm"
3/ DEV - Dancing In The Dark
Quote:
Alluring , sexy and hypnotic are the first adjectives that comes to mind.
I first heard it before it started to become successful and it's actually not far from perfection.
Each elements come together and they all have their time to shine especially the glorious and orgasmic saxophone, so in that sense there's a very good balance.
I've seen a lot of criticism toward Dev's vocal and it's unfair IMO since she's one of the reason listening to this song is a very pleasant experience. Indeed, if the lyrics of the orginal are almost X-rated, the singer always remains sensual and sultry.
Memorable lyric:"Tell me baby if it’s wrong to let my hands do what they want?
Late at night I pretend we are dance-dance- dancing in the dark (repeat)
Ooh la la. (repeat)"
2/Nadia Ali - Rapture
Quote:
This one is not really a new song since it's a remix version made by Avicii of a classic club track from 2002, yet it's easily one the most gorgeous, aerial and elegant single of the year.
Nadia's tone is abslolutely perfect and alluring and the whole track feels like a countdown to happiness. If you don't have a smile upon your face after hearing this masterpiece, I'm afraid I can't do anything for you.
On a more personal note, I used this song last summer to create an 8 minutes long video for my friends (basically about our friendship) and they all clapped for me after I showed it to them so it will always be linked to great memories.
Memorable lyric: "The night I laid my eyes on you
I felt everything around me move
Got nervous when you looked my way
But you knew all the words to say"
1/ Alexandra Stan - Mr Saxobeat
Quote:
"Mr Saxobeat" was posted on April 2011 on my facebook page and changed EVERYTHING !
As you can see with this countdown, I had a really weird saxophone obsession this year but no songs exploited this instrument better than this one. F*ck, they went as far as making the saxophone "harmonize" with her vocals on the chorus. You found my biggest weakness, Alexandra ! Kudos to you
The slowed down part during the bridge also gives me life. So much attitude !
And even the cringeworthy lyrics couldn't stop my infatuation.
I'm a sucker for Romanian dance music... It's probably because it's the closest thing I found to the magnificent Eurodance era of the 90s.
Honestly, if I'd made a countdown in 2010, I would have probably put 3 INNA songs in the top 5 !
I'm serious I needed them as much as I needed water during the summer of that year !
Totally here for 8-6, but that's also because I haven't listened to the other two songs yet. I think that LFN is one of the better singles from this Katy Perry era, so you're not alone in that regard.

Yes ! LFN is pretty catchy and uplifting.
It's not the smartest song ever, of course, but the song didn't deserve the backlash it got from fans of pseudo intellectual pop singers who didn't even create pop song as good as this one, this year.
