GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUND$
Six girls stand before me, and five will bow down to Adele.
Basically 2011 in a nutshell, although said-five other women still managed to break records and carve their own lanes within Adele's shadow. For the average stan, it was the perfect year. The constant presence of all these ladies was something that not only kept things interesting on ATRL, but really made a mark amongst the mainstream music industry on how powerful women truly are.
While these women pretty much ruled the globe with an iron fist, they were only a sliver of what 2011 had to offer. A myriad of alternative and r&b/hip-hop acts released new material, but now that I've had time to look back and reflect on the year, it was the british pop scene that shone the most. With exciting new debuts, and a variety of sounds (shout out to Katy B and Alex Clare who really utilised "dubstep" better than any of the main girls did), british pop became the true star of 2011, led by the almighty Adele.
The 2011 version of myself was a lot different to who I am today, and that includes my music taste. I was very pop-centric, obsessed with the pop girls and didn't really listen to much outside the Top 40 on radio, although a side dish of hip-hop/R&B was always on the menu, too. I thought I was happy living in this fairly limited bubble, but eventually I got sick of what I was listening to and pined for something new.
Now that I've discovered more music from 2011, my charts look different to what they did back then. These lists are essentially a mix of my favourites back then and now.

AIN'T YOUTH MEANT TO BE BEAUTIFUL?
2012 was a wonderful year. Often slated as a "boring year" on this forum, 2012 was one of my favourite years in music to date. A sharp contrast to the previous year, this year brought a lot more diversity to the table, with artists like fun. and Gotye bringing a new sound to American radios that had been drenched in dance-pop for years.
Amongst a mixed bag of hits from the year, it was hard to find a constant theme. What was the one thing that gripped the public most of all throughout the entire year? Turns out the theme of 2012 was youth, with artists such as Drake, fun., and One Direction all releasing songs around the concept of "you only live once, we are young, so live while we're young". A theme that got a little stale in the end, but a welcome change from the "you're a firework, so express yourself" anthems that Katy Perry and Lady Gaga had been releasing since 2010.
One of the reasons I love 2012 so much is because it was definitely a definitive year for my evolving taste. I was still listening to ATRL's favourites, but while the forum sat around complaining, waiting for specific stars to return, I decided to try and branch out with my taste and find new music. That's when I really started to hone in on british pop, and found a lot of my now-favourite artists. Alternative pop was also making itself known on my radar, aided by the rise of alternative influences on the charts. All in all, 2012 was really the beginning of my musical journey.
Again, these lists are a mix of my absolute favourites from 2012, and also what I discovered this year that originate from last year.

WE'LL NEVER BE ROYALS
Welcome back to Jungle Fever, everyone! What a brilliant year it's been. Full of comebacks, surprises, and innovation. I happen to say this every year, but as I continue to discover new scenes and genres within music, every year gets a little better for me. 2013 is my favourite year of music to date, because there was just so much to discover.
The alternative trend from 2012 was still ever present, Sia herself became a trend, and we started seeing hip-hop/r&b make a rise again. Looking back on the biggest hits of the year, there are some gems, and of course, some duds. But overall it wasn't too bad, at least in comparison to some other years.
We had Miley Cyrus trying to shock the world with anything she could find - kittens, foam fingers, sledge hammers - making her the most talked about girl of the year. Justin Timberlake kicked off the year with a throwback R&B song and a very successful Part 1 album, but was accused of ripping off Robin Thicke. Seemingly out of nowhere, Robin released "Blurred Lines", and well, we know the rest.
Kanye upped the challenge of releasing an album, releasing without an album cover and not much notice. After much critical acclaim, Kanye remained relevant throughout the year through wild quotes and becoming a father. Others also followed his new album plan, and this is where I need to credit Beyonce. Obviously releasing so late and so unexpectedly meant I couldn't quite fit her into my lists, but the album is magnificent and King B really stepped it up. The actual release of the album is hilariously brilliant and it's another gem in her crown. Bow down, bitches!
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took the world by storm with their viral hit "Thrift Shop", but proved their worth to the pop world with followup "Same Love". Then, finally, we have Lorde. A newcomer from New Zealand who has become rather infamous in stan culture for running her mouth, but she has music to back it up (unlike the tragic downfall of twitter personalities such as Azealia Banks). More on Lorde a bit later, but her occasionally misguided and misinterpreted commentary on pop, hip-hop, and feminism definitely had people talking.
For me, it was the indie-pop scene that held my attention for most of the year. There was a lot of exciting talent and newcomers in the scene, I found one of my absolute favourite artists, and it was just great year. British pop and hip-hop/r&b were both on my radar, but in comparison to previous years, I hadn't paid a heap of attention to them this year. 2014 looks like it's going to be a big year for both of those genres, though, so let's see how we go.
And now, onto K-Pop. I've had a very vague interest in k-pop for a couple of years now, due to some great members on this site who were obsessed with the genre back then. But the past three months have opened my eyes to the magic of the genre, it's very concentrated and clever in comparison to western pop. This has probably been the biggest surprise for me in terms of listening this year, because I never figured I would become obsessed.
But nevertheless, we're here. So despite this horrible mess of a blurb of the year, let's get ready for what will hopefully be a great countdown.
-
As you can perhaps guess from the results of previous years, this year I shall be keeping things simple.
-We're on a site that revolves around Top 40 radio. It's only fitting to make my own version of a Top 40 chart, right?
- The ten best albums of the year, plus a few extra 'bubbling under' albums also worthy of praise.
I hope everyone finds something new that they like!
May the odds be ever in your (fave's) favour.
Credit to my brother MWB for 97% of the graphics.
Shoutout to Wafflinson and Jack! who helped me with the remaining 3%.

I just did a quick count on my song list and there are 15 british artists.
Less than 50%. But the music is still great anyway, don't worry!

Exactly, there is always an artist out there doing something great. So even if what someone is currently into isn't doing them any favours anymore, there's still so much to discover for that person.
