Mariah Carey's self-titled debut, opened her up to the world at a huge pace. The album contained 12 tracks; 4 of which became #1 singles in the U.S. and did small throughout the world. The album debuted at #85, and went onto spend 11 weeks at #1, sell over 9 million, and win 2 Grammys. The album placed her on a map, and did so hard.
She followed the success of her debut album, with "Emotions". Released in Fall of 1991; the album opened and peaked at #4 along with having the Lead Single go #1, making her the only artist to have their first 5 singles go #1. The two remaining singles of the album also went Top 5, propelling the album to sell over 4 million copies in U.S..
The Breakthroughs
Mariah Carey's third album failed to show ANY sign or form of her career slowing down. "Music Box" proved to be her most successful album on a global term, opening many doors for her. "Dreamlover" and "Hero" followed the paths of her previous success, among also being #1. The real worldwide success came with "Without You" which went #1 in almost a dozen countries and broke many records and barriers for her. Overall, "Music Box" remains one of the biggest albums of all-time with sales over 30 million WW, and Diamond in U.S..
Daydream followed the legacy of it's predecessor largely. "Fantasy" debuted at #1 in US, becoming the first song ever to by a female. "One Sweet Day" then became the longest #1 in U.S. history; and "Always Be My Baby" become one of her most remembered songs. Although it didn't reach WW success on Music Box's level, it's her biggest era in U.S..
The Holidays
While experiencing her peak success, Mariah did a genius move and dabbled onto Holiday music. She released, "Merry Christmas". As a result, she sold over 12 million copies WW, and it became the Best-Selling Christmas Album Ever. It gave birth to "All I Want for Christmas Is You" arguably, the most known Christmas song of modern times.
Mariah returned to the Holiday phenomenon of hers in 2010, releasing her 2nd Christmas album -- "Merry Christmas II You". The album became the first Christmas album to go #1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and was certified Gold. It features workings with John Legend, and her own mother, Patricia Carey.
The Rebirths
Following a divorce with Tommy Mottola, new control, and a new image -- came the album "Butterfly". Though a step down from previous success, it still did moderately well and opened her up to the Urban doors more than ever. "Honey" became her 3rd single to debut at #1, along with becoming her most Urban single yet (not including remixes). Smaller things like "The Roof", "Breakdown", and "Butterfly" showed more control also.
"Rainbow" effortlessly followed the steps of "Butterfly" almost identically. Though the album gained her some controversy and turned a lot of heads for the first time, she became more and more comfortable with herself and her image. "Heartbreaker" became her 14th #1 single, and is one of her most liked songs til this day.
The Compilations
Mariah Carey's first compilation came upon in 1998, with "#1's". The album compiling her biggest hits yet, went successful. Becoming 5x Platinum, it yielded a Top 10 and a Top 20 hit along the way. She also did considerably well Worldwide, and did a collaboration with the iconic Whitney Houston.
"Greatest Hits" came upon in 2001, and featured another compilation of the biggest songs of her career. Though not as successful as the previous, most likely due to coming such a short period after it still went multi-platinum and sells considerably well today among her compilations.
The Indies
Mariah Carey's first commercial failure came about in 2001, with the Soundtrack "Glitter" and it's accompanying movie. Despite bombing with all singles, and barely selling 600K in the United States it still cements an important role in her career, and both works have became cult classics in music and movies.
"Charmbracelet" released quickly following her failure in Winter 2002, also did not farewell. Due to coming back without letting the GP get fresh thoughts on her, and failing to provide mainstream music it also didn't do good overall despite outpacing Glitter.
The Returns
After a period of no success, Mariah wouldn't let that continue any longer. She gathered the best producers, the best songs yet, and came back storming in 2005 with "The Emancipation of Mimi". The album became the best-selling album of the year, won 2 Grammy, gained 3 #1's, and left her with the "Song of the Decade", yet again. Nothing could stop, "Mimi" and everything went in her way.
"E=MC²" fared smaller success ofcourse, but it still turned out good. "Touch My Body" became her 18th #1 hit, only putting her behind The Beatles for most #1 hits. She also sold 1 million copies in U.S., among with over 4 million WW and went through many personal changes. She got a husband again, and she finally somewhat settled down.
The Present
Mariah returned back onto the scene in 2009, with "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel". The moderate success yielded a Top 10 hit, "Obsessed" and went pushed the album to Gold. It pulled her into a more Adult R&B side, following her previous effort being more Pop oriented.
Following many singles, and pushbacks -- Mariah Carey released "Me. I Am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse". Though it didn't follow any of her previous success to her past career, the album highlighted her maturity and spot in music. Containing the Platinum hit, "#Beautiful" and many more hot collaborations, Mariah put herself back onto the map and more importantly, defined herself more than ever.
