The Post-Punk artist that she was before becoming 'The Queen of Pop', the music of her band Emmy, could be compared to Nirvana's first album, she has deep Rock roots, you can see that on her live shows, she always incorporates the guitar a lot on her performances, even turning her Pop hits into Rock, she's a Rocker at heart. I've always believed that if she makes a Rock album, the general public, who still have a wrong perception of her talent, would change their opinions, if she show the world what she is capable of. Rock musicians are often considered the most talented, due to the fact that they write and produce their music, play instruments and have great lyrics. Madonna can do that, of course she will probably piss off some Pop fans and would underperformed but the music and the acclaim would be insane, some people still think she is nothing more than just a Pop Star.
Madonna did start out as a punk artist before becoming a dance artist. Would be interesting if she ever did a punk/new wave theme album but I doubt it ever will happen

There was some good songs in there ("Bells Ringing" especially - actually a total tune), but her style was very derivative of people like Debbie Harry, Pat Benatar, Chrissie Hynde, etc. She found her own niche with Dance, and could incorporate her modern dance training and more adventurous visual ideas in that as the post-punk scene of the time wouldn't have been as appreciative of her go-go dancing and wedding dresses and whatnot. I doubt she'd make a rock record now, it wouldn't make sense in this stage of her career.
