With the exception of Rihanna, & Michael Jackson I see a lot of posts claiming that successful black artist such as Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Usher are local. Why are they considered local when their record sales and/or touring receipts tell a different story compared with artist that this forum claim are global.
they arnt local tho. well not the ones you just named. those are international renowned names. ive travelled to a few countries and everyone knows of Beyonce, Mariah and Janet for sure.
Because a lot of the people here are completely illogical when trying to "big up" their faves and think calling Urban artists "local" is a drag. When it's pretty obvious that Hip Hop, Rap, R&B music doesn't have the widespread support and appeal as dance pop music.
It's basically used to compare something incomparable to their own faves achievements.
R&B/Urban music really isn't that popular outside the US and maybe Canada. It's not about race. If Bey, Mariah, Whitney (post-1990), or some of the others did the same music (Still urban, but with shades of pop and dance) as Rihanna, they would definitely be respected in terms of global impact. However, they still smashed in the world's biggest music market, so I doubt they care that much.
Because a lot of black artists do R&B, urban, rap and people think the only genre that isn't local is pop.

Any other answer in this thread is wrong and racist.

Beyonce sells more than Rihanna, and her tours outgross her with an urban sound which is my point. Mariah was never really all that urban. The point was these artist aren't even local, so why do they have to be referred to as local when they are global stars.
did someone actually said Whitney Houston is local?
Whitney was more global and had more worldwide appeal than Mariah, Janet, Celine and all the other girls and still is. Only Madonna has had more global presence, power and fame than Whitney
Whitney and Madge are the most global females artists in modern music history.
