Before any talk of confusion, let's break down some categories:


Pop - any traditional pop artist who was significant in 2013 (eg: Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, etc)

Rock - any traditional or modern rock act, signed to a major label (eg: Paramore, Kings of Leon, Imagine Dragons, Muse, etc)

Alternative - any rock act who hews to the 'different' side of the road, but is too well-known/signed to an offshoot of a major label (e.g: Vampire Weekend, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire, etc)

Independent - any truly independent/small-scale artist (eg: Waxahatchee, Shearwater, Grouper, etc)

R&B - any mainstream Urban/Rhythmic act (eg: Ciara, Tamar Braxton, K. Michelle, etc)

Urban/Alternative - any R&B act pushing new boundaries (e.g.: Jhene Aiko, The Weeknd)

The actual vote won't take place until December, but I'm hesitant to say exactly when - as last year we voted six days before THE WORLD CHANGED. Don't want that to happen again!

But we can always plan/discuss here until then.

This was a great event last year, I enjoyed it for sure!

I started it early this year because I was at work when BWET was released. It made me realize that, for the first time this year, Taylor had competition for Female. (fka twigs and St. Vincent are too small, Ariana is too draggable, and how many people remember M:IAM ... TEC?)

The boundaries between Rock/Alternative and R&B/Urban Alternative are too blurred.

You should count December releases from 2013 like Billboard does.
