12-year-old gives birth on school excursion
Quote:
A 12-year-old girl from Groningen in the north of the Netherlands gave birth to a healthy baby daughter during a primary school excursion last week. The less-than-teenage mother was unaware that she was pregnant, explained a spokesman from Groningen emergency services.
The girl was enjoying a day out with primary school classmates when she started getting painful stomach cramps. Paramedics from the ambulance that was called delivered the infant.
Total surprise
It’s not known how long the girl’s pregnancy had gone on. The news was a total surprise not only for the 12-year-old mother, but for her parents and the whole neighbourhood, according to the spokesman.
Mother and daughter are still in hospital and are doing well. Government bodies including the Youth Care Agency (Jeugdzorg) are standing by to offer help and a guardian for the baby has been appointed.
Parents of the new mother’s classmates have been informed by letter of what has happened and teachers and others in authority have been offered support. No details of the school outing have been released.
Young and old mothers
The FIOM Foundation which counsels teenage mothers says figures show that 40 girls aged 15 and younger gave birth in the Netherlands in 2009.
Last week, a 63-year-old Dutch woman gave birth to a healthy baby daughter after egg cell donation treatment in Italy.
The Dutch are renowned for having extremely low rates of teenage pregnancy. Figures from 2009 showed that there were five births per 1,000 teenagers. In the UK, where rates are high, the figure in the same year was 27 per 1,000 teenagers.
The low rates in the Netherlands are put down to an open attitude to sex education which begins at an early age.

Here's another article though involving the father
Quote:
In the Netherlands, a Dutch schoolgirl was on a class field trip when she started to feel "violent stomach pains."
A concerned adult chaperone phoned emergency services.
An ambulance arrived and emergency medical technicians quickly realized that the 12-year-old girl was about to give birth, according to the British Daily Telegraph.
"Neither the girl nor her family had realized she was pregnant, and there were no external signs to show it," a spokesman for Dutch health services told the Telegraph.
A social worker is now looking after the baby, and Dutch authorities are investigating the pregnancy of the girl. Police have interviewed the girl and are trying to determine who the father is.
"It is in any case a criminal offense," Kirsten Smit, a spokeswoman for the country's prosecutor's office told BNO News. "The age of consent in the Netherlands is 16."
De Telegraaf, the largest daily morning paper in the Netherlands, is reporting that the 52-year-old father of the girl was previously convicted of sexually abusing a child in a previous marriage.
