Grindr hookup with teen leads to charges for 4 men
Quote:
Four Michigan men are facing felony charges for allegedly having sexual encounters with a then-15-year-old Brighton-area boy they individually met on Grindr, a smartphone app geared toward gay men.
Brighton police allege the four men separately “connected with” the boy on Grindr, which describes itself as a “Gay iPhone app” where men can find “local gay, bi and curious guys for dating or friends.”
The alleged encounters occurred in January and March and were reported by a family member of the now-16-year-old complainant, who resides in the Brighton area. How the relative learned what happened was not disclosed.
The men allegedly picked up the complainant and went to undisclosed locations to have sex. Police said “all of the incidents, but one” occurred in Livingston County.
Livingston County District Court records show that Cody Hunter Swatling, 18, of South Lyon waived a probable-cause hearing Tuesday, sending his case to circuit court for trial.
Alex Peter Benedict, 24, of Brighton also was in court Tuesday, but his case was adjourned to Oct. 7.
Swatling and Benedict, who are each being held on a $500,000 bond, are charged with accosting a child for immoral purposes.
Swatling also faces two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, and one count each of using a computer to commit the crime and possession of child sexually abusive material.
Benedict is charged with one count of third-degree CSC and using a computer to communicate with another to commit the crime.
Warrants have been authorized for the other two men, who were identified in court records as John Joseph Gasiorek III, 20, of Brooklyn and Burhan Ahmed Mian, 27, of Flint. They are each facing allegations of third-degree CSC, accosting a minor for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit the crime.
The warrant also charges Gasiorek with one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct while Mian is facing a charge of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration, according to court records.
