It's a bit unfair to compare the two though, while the Korean music market is clearly significantly smaller than America's. Korea's albums tend to be extremely front-loaded, especially with BGs.

This. Also, EXO's numbers include preorders as well as several different versions of the albums as well as two language albums.

Pretty much Exo is selling 2 different language albums, so even though they sold 500k, it doesn't count as one.

It does. It's the same album and that's how SK counts it. They have different covers but still the same album. That's like saying a standard and Target deluxe are separate. As far as I know, pre-orders will be reflected in Gaon. Hanteo is all real sales. With that said, this 500k comes from 2 different SK tracking weeks I believe so it's not entirely their first week.
