Mario Kart fails to save Wii U sales
Quote:
Mario Kart on the Wii U is really good. Unfortunately it's just one game -- and it looks like it won't be enough to rescue the Wii U's sales. Nintendo apparently agrees, stating that its 9.9 billion yen loss was due to a lack of hit titles outside of the flagship racer. Matter-of-factly, Nintendo said:
"The operating loss was 9.4 billion yen ($91 million) because total selling, general and administrative expenses including fixed expenses exceeded gross profit. "
Wii U console sales have improved in the Americas and Europe: 510,000 units were sold worldwide in the last three months [bringing the total to 6.68 million], compared to 160,000 in the same period last year. In Japan, however, Wii U sales have decreased year-on-year. Nintendo is hoping its plans for a series of console-connected toy figurines along the lines of the hit Skylanders series will help to improve that bottom line.
Mario Kart 8 managed to sell 2.82 million copies so far, meaning that relative to Wii U console sales, most players already had the games console to play it on.

Wasn't this the game that was going to save the Wii U? What happened? Only 510,000 sales in the last 3 months? That's only an 8% increase...

Yeah. A game like MarioKart which has extreme longevity will save a company within 2 months of release.

Oh well. With 10 billion in the bank they could release flop consoles every couple years for the next two decades.
Making legendary games all the while

Did you see E3? Most of Nintendo's new games were Mario spin-off's.
They need a new IP! That isn't a party game!

Mario Kart Wii sold over 900,000 copies in only Japan in the first week, whereas it took Mario Kart 8 two weeks to sell 1.2 million copies. There's obviously something else going on here

No way.
Most people will just play the 3DS version. Mario Kart 8 had a much bigger chance than Smash does.

Oh look. It is the liar in another thread lying
Mario related games made up less than 10% of Nintendo's E3 lineup.

You always say that yet you have never proven me wrong. You call me a liar when you can't defend it.
I'm not lying.
There are more games associate with Mario, than any other franchise, when it comes to E3.
Nintendo have other games coming out, but the Mario franchise had the most games.
Meanwhile, how many new IP's have Nintendo got? 1?

Not that I have any faith in your ability to count, but you should try your math out on this list of their games from E3.

You just proved my point. The Mario franchise has the most games coming out, compared to the other franchise's.
Which means Nintendo focused more on the Mario franchise, than the others.

The games on the Wii U, so far, are terrible. We have a couple of good releases, one of which is set to be negatively critiqued, which is Hyrule Warriors and the other which will be Super Smash Bros. The variety on the Wii U is also terrible... It is slightly frustrating because the GameCube and Wii had superb releases within the first two years. The Wii U is very embarrassing.

An honest Nintendo fan
Sony are having a rough start as well, even though they are on top. The games look good but most are coming in 2015. So for now we are left with average titles.
I think the entire industry is going to suffer, and will get better as time goes on.

Wow. Even I am shocked at your lack of counting skills.
Non-Mario Games mentioned in list: 65
Mario games, or games with Mario characters mentioned in list: 6
